Genuinely Confused RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am running Vista Ultimate RTM.

I tried to unlock my machine this morning and got: 0xC004E002 "The software licensing service reported that the license store contains inconsistent data."  At this point I was returned to the login screen.

After rebooting I could login but get a watermark on my desktop indicating that my copy of windows is not genuine.

I looked to make sure I was still activated, I am.

I went to www.microsoft.com/genuine and it validates with no errors.

I want for my machine to automatically lock itself and I get the same error message when unlocking!!!

Here is the output from Microsoft Geniune Advantage Diagnostic Tool:

How can I unlock my machine from now on?

    Thanks,

  • Chris:

    Please try this:

Open an elevated command prompt (find Command Prompt in the start menu, right-click it and choose "Run as administrator") and type "net start slsvc" (and hit enter).

If you get the following message:

"The Software Licensing service is starting.
The Software Licensing service was started successfully."

Reboot, and try validating again.  You can do that by clicking "Validate Windows" here: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/
If you get a different message please run a disk check and then run (no quotes) "sfc /scannow" in an elevated Command Prompt.  Reboot, and then try validating again.

These set of commands should try and clear the inconsistent data in your licensing store.
