MAS API downtime RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

First of all I'd like to thank you for allowing us to access the Microsoft Academics API. We have built a nice research application for our bachelor thesis relying on the data from the API. It wouldn't have been nearly as good without live data.

Today (and other days as well) I have been noticing moments of downtime, sometimes >30 minutes. While I didn't mind this at all during development, next week we have invited researchers to evaluate our project. The results of these evaluations are very important for the paper we are writing. However, if it is impossible to connect to the API at that time they will have nothing to evaluate. This could be problematic for our thesis.

Two questions come to mind. First of all, we have been using JSON for our requests. I deem this to be highly unlikely, but would it be more reliable to use SOAP?

Second of all, should I expect these downtimes to occur frequently over the next week? I know this might be difficult to answer, but I need to know if I need to take extra steps in avoiding this problem during evaluation.

    Thank you for reading!

ps. at this moment the api is not responding to any requests

  • I have not received any successful responses from the JSON server yesterday or today.  It would be nice if there was a site that could keep us posted on API status with a simple "OK" or "Experiencing extended downtime."  I've been working on the API daily for a few months now, and while I have observed intermittent unresponsive behavior, this week has stood out as a complete blackout.

  • I'm currently experiencing the same problem, very frustrating! I need to test the application I wrote for my thesis, which is due in a couple of days!

  • Hello All,

It will be helpful if you can post the error messages that you are seeing. Not aware of any downtimes during the timeframe mentioned and see the links http://academic.research.microsoft.com/common/api/api.svc and http://academic.research.microsoft.com/common/api/api.svc?wsdl working. Also tested the service via the svcutil.exe and got positive results.

Additional information will be helpful in this regard.

    Thanks,
    Rahul Sharma

Both of those links immediately redirect to http://academic.research.microsoft.com/Error.html for me.  This is the same behavior that I was experiencing last week.  On Thursday, I started getting small amounts of activity, but right now, I would say about 80% of my MAS API queries are simply being redirected to http://academic.research.microsoft.com/Error.html.

  • Thanks dkcaczynski for your reply. Aware of few instances (not all) where users with IE10 are getting the error page. We are looking into this issue.

Let me know if that's not the case with you.

  • I am doing a web service call from Play Framework 2.1, but I can duplicate the results using wget at the command line or by entering the queries into chrome or firefox (I have not been using IE at all, so I cannot confirm if it does or does not work in IE).  I have tried from my home network, from Central Michigan University, and from my EC2 instance on AWS.

If you like, you can try it from my EC2 instance yourself:  academichound.com  Just enter a university and a search term, and the program will find the university's rank in terms of number of times cited on the topic.  The source code for the MAS API service call can be found here: https://bitbucket.org/david_kaczynski/academichound-0.2/src/2707bc4c51c731f50eabc2177a315e49c873835a/app/models/Actors.scala?at=default, lines 43-44 (a method was generalized to take the URL as a string and return the response as JSON).  I can get you a copy of the application's log file, if that helps.

I have been working with the MAS API for about 3 months, and as far as I recall, it was working great.  Ever since early last week, the MAS API started working very randomly for me.  Sometimes it works for a couple queries and then fails immediately afterwards.  Most of the time, though, the service has been timing out or returning this:

    {"d":{"__type":"Response:http:\/\/research.microsoft.com","Author":null,"Confere
    nce":null,"Domain":null,"Journal":null,"Keyword":null,"Organization":null,"Publi
    cation":null,"ResultCode":2,"Trend":null,"Version":"1.2"}}

Here are a few queries I have been attempting:

    http://academic.research.microsoft.com/json.svc/search?AppId=*&FulltextQuery=central+michigan+university&ResultObjects=Organization&StartIdx=1&EndIdx=20

    http://academic.research.microsoft.com/json.svc/search?AppId=*&FulltextQuery=computer+science&OrganizationID=6280&ResultObjects=Organization&StartIdx=1&EndIdx=1

    http://academic.research.microsoft.com/json.svc/search?AppId=*&FulltextQuery=computer+science&ResultObjects=Organization&StartIdx=1&EndIdx=1

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

    David

  • For what it's worth, the API has been working fine for the last two days (since Tuesday, or me).  Thank you for staying on top of it, Rahul
