Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade

Question

I'm running WM6 on XV6800 ( HTC) with Verizon. I asked the Verizon folks how to upgrade to WM6.1 and they told me that you can't upgrade the OS. You're basically stuck with what you have. Any thoughts on another avenue to get this update?

I have the XV6800 from Verizon and I just upgraded to WM 6.1 so I thought I'd offer a few notes.
First, you can get the ROM update by going to http://support.vzw.com/phones/index.html?p=3411. At the bottom of that page there's a "download software update" link. Follow that and it should take you to http://pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=89&cid=1&mid=287&carrier=Verizon%20Wireless
Then you need to find the MR1 Update, agree to the terms and download it.
The zip has 2 files, a ROM upgrade utility that does all the work and a word document explaining the procedure.
When I did this, it went smoothly and I had no issues. (it totally writes over everything so remember to back up any stuff you want to keep)
The only issue I did have was once I did this my device no longer connected to verizon's network. I got an "unable to authenticate your device" warning when I tried to make a call and a "network failed" trying to connect to the data plan.
To fix that, I first went to a Verizon store and they took it behind the counter and said "its fixed - try it". I tried synching email and it worked so I assumed it was fixed. On the way home from the store I tried to make a call and got the same error. So I tried to reprogram it myself using *228 and it said it was successful but didn't fix the problem. I then called #8899 and explained the situation to them and they told me they'd push out another security certificate so as soon as I disconnected from the call I was to reset the device.
I did and that seemed to work. I'm not sure if there's another way to get the device security certificates (whatever that is) pushed out without talking to #8899 but it was pretty easy... the call took 3:21 according to the call log.
Hope this helps...

I don't know what could be the problem but after seeing your post, I tried it again (October 6, 2008 7:30 am EST) and the links worked just fine for me.
1) http://pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=89&cid=1&mid=287&carrier=Verizon%20Wireless
2) Along the right, there's 2 links. One that says "MR1 Upgrade" and one that says "QWERTY Keyboard Fix". Click the MR1 Upgrade and the little plus sign expands to show a download button.
3) Click the new download button and a popup will show. On that pop up will be a single "Agree to Terms" button.
4) Click the agree button and a new 2nd download button will appear.
5) Click the new 2nd download button and the "XV6800 MR1 Upgrade.zip" file will start to download.
This is the file you need to flash the ROM.
(This one http://support.vzw.com/phones/index.html?p=3411 still takes you to the VZW support page. At the bottom of this page, towards the right hand side, there's a link "Device Software Update". This link takes you to step 1 above.)

I am afraid that Verizon is the only legal source for this ROM update.

I just bought the SMT 5800 with windows Mobile 6 and specifically asked if I could upgrade to 6.1 and was told I could. If that is not the case I will return the phone.Sunday, June 1, 2008 7:15 AM

Have you spoken with Verizon about all this? I have a Palm Treo 700wx, which I bought just before 6 came out (I have 5), but the phone can run it. These sites show you everything but how to upgrade the bloody OS. Help :-)Tuesday, July 1, 2008 11:18 PM

As an FYI. Having tired these links several times, the last being today, they no longer work to acquire the download. Called the Verizon 800 number tech support and they told me to return the phone, ask the tech at the store or call PDC for the upgrade files! I sincerely believe I should have stayed with my Palm Treo 755PMonday, October 6, 2008 4:50 AM

Amazing I guess the verizon tech support guy really did fofllow through on the problem. Teh DOWNLOAD button was not there. The tech tried it also and he said there was a problem with the web page. Glad to see they fixed it. I got the download finally. thanks for posting as I was giving up and going back to a Palm unit.
My battery also only lasts about 24 hours on stand by..pretty sad! Verizon is willing to swap me another new unit. It is just so much hassel. I never had any problems with the Palm units I have had in the past. This is my first Windows based smartphone and so far it has been fairly "dumb"
thanks again for kettung me know the site was workingTuesday, October 7, 2008 1:12 AM -
I also have the xv6800 with wm6 and carrier is also Verizon. I'm on the edge of paying an early cancellation fee & at the same time throwing that $500 piece of you know what in the garabage. Wrost 2 decisions, Verizon & the xv6800

Well I found out why the links were not working for several days. The download that was there prior to Oct 5 enabled the GPS function on the 6800. Verizon found out about it and had PCD disable the download. Wish I would have downloaded the upgrade sooner ;-)Saturday, October 11, 2008 10:14 PM

Follow up:
I just finished flashing the ROM chip upgrading to the new 6.1 . Call #8899 (fraud department at Verizon) they sent the certificate to verify the ownership of the phone. The tech called me on the land line before he disconnected my cell call. He wanted to be sure that the phone was working properly. He sent two text messages and one VM. He was very helpful
He told me that a new touch screen Blackberry should soon be out...very similar to the iPhone. I agree with the other positing that this is not a very good product but neither is Windows CE. I will be taking the 6800 back to Verizon for either the new Blackberry or another Palm. Windows CE is just bloatware! Very cumbersome and a huge memory hog. Palm & Blackberry have the OS that really is designed for Smartphones. Microsoft should go back to the drawing board and take some hints from Palm!Saturday, October 11, 2008 10:38 PM -
I'm running WM6 on p3450 ( HTC) with Verizon. I asked the Verizon folks how to upgrade to WM6.1 and they told me that you can't upgrade the OS. You're basically stuck with what you have. Any thoughts on another avenue to get this update?

Mark's info was EXTREMELY helpful as well as encouraging. I would like to amend the last part about calling tech support and having them send security certificates.
I called tech support first hoping to avoid any problems. I was told all I would need to do after downloading the new OS was dial *228 and Option 1 to activate the phone. Though it said over the air programming was successful, I could not send or receive calls, so I called tech guy (John) back.
The only additional step needed was to turn off the phone, remove the battery for 10 seconds, then restart. Worked like a charm!!
Thank you so much Mark, and the other writer who gave the upgrade website.
