Black srceen after logon, no functionality RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
I started my computer the other day and everything was going fine until after I typed my password, the mouse pointer turns into a blue circular hourglass and says welcome for a unusually long period of time (30secs or so) and then I get a black screen.  I can see my mouse pointer, but nothing responds.  I get the same thing in safe mode.  I did notice a dialog that popped up after my laptop was sitting there for hours, that said something to the effect that I might be a victim of software pirating and my copy of Vista may not be genuine.  It is an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate, so I know that it is not pirated.

    Please help... :-/

    Thanks.

  • Hello John,

Please download and run the MS Genuine Diagnostic Tool utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?

    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.

    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you,

  • Hi, I am not sure how I can do that...I have no functionality available.  No commandline window or anything, just a black screen.  Safe mode does the same thing....maybe I can get into safe mode with command prompt, but I have not tried, nor will I be able to run this tool.

  •  John,

    Lets try the following:

    1. Go to safe mode with networking  (restart the pc keep presing f8)
    2. Go online and download MGADiag
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
    3.  Run  MGADiag tool,  copy the results into notepad and save to your desktop and follow the steps I provided earlier.

Please let me know if this helps.   Thank you,

  • Sorry, but this doesn't work either.  When I boot in safe mode, I get to the login screen, proceed to login and then get the same black screen, except now it has "Safe Mode" in the corners and "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 6001: Service Pack 1)" on the top center of the screen.

    Thanks.

  • John,

It appears you are running a beta version of Vista is this correct? When you are in Safe Mode does it not allow you to access the internet? Also please try and remove all USB devices and restart the computer.

    Thank you,

  • Hi, I was not aware this was a beta version, it was direct from the laptop manufacturer.  Is Build 6001 Beta?  I have no USB devices attached.  Thanks.
