'The product key you typed has been blocked from use by Microsoft' Windows 7 Ultimate RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased Windows 7 last year, and recently did a clean install on a new hard disk (upgrading!), however I was shocked to see this message  'The product key you typed has been blocked from use by Microsoft'.  I really don't know why this has happened, and as I've purchased a retail copy from dabs.com, a well known internet retailer it is highly unlikely that it is counterfeit - and also the fact that I've never had any problems with it before.

Here is the diagnostic report from genuine advantage:

I've entered the key, run he validation, which says activate it... I go to activate and it says key has been blocked, and even phone activation tells me I may be a victim of software counterfeiting :(

I can see no reason for it - the Key hasn't been published anywhere that I can find, and it doesn't seem to be a Default Key.
I suggest that you either wait for Darin to check it later today, or ring the Activation line again - this time do not respond to the request for which service you require, which should force an operator to respond. See what they have to say.

  • I rang microsoft, and the lovely people at microsoft india said that they while the key is genuine and valid, it had been used a lot which is why it had been blocked.  I guess it's not impossible it was stolen as I did have a problem with a virus not long ago, and this would explain it!  Anyhow they were very understanding, and supplied me with a new product key free of charge, which I was very pleased about :-)

  • Good, I'm glad they did that.

I took a closer look at the Activation history, for that Blocked product key, and it seems that about 3 or 4 times a month the key was Activated. However, the Hardware IDs of each of the computers (that the key was activated on) are either the same or very similar to each other. This suggests that the keys were activated on that same computer each time with just a few peices of hardware changed.

In other words, I don't believe the key was stolen or leaked.  It just seams that you (or some other user of that computer) kept reactivating the key for some reason.

    Thank you,

    Darin MS

Glad that you seem to have reached a mutually acceptable resolution to your problem - I see that Darin has supplied some more details, which make a certain amount of sense to me, and hope that they also make  sense to you.

    Good Luck!
