OEM Downgrade from Vista BE to XP Pro RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have 30 HP PC's.  We bought these with Vista Business OEM.   Per http://download.microsoft.com/download/d/2/3/d23b9533-169d-4996-b198-7b9d3fe15611/downgrade_chart.doc we have downgrade rights to XP PRO.   We have 3rd party software that we run our business on which does not yet support Vista.  The new release will, but it is not out yet.

We have spent weeks trying to back rev these new PC's to XP PRO.   We have tried installing the PCs from the XP Media that came with them and using the the VISTA code, but it does not work.   We call Microsoft and they say to contact the OEM, HP.   HP says that it's a Microsoft problem and to call Microsoft.    Someone suggested a $100 per PC bribe to Microsoft to get Microsoft to get us the XP Keycodes which will activate these PCs. (VLK I believe.)   I'd rather not pay this since I legally have a right to XP PRO which Microsoft is denying us,

How do I get my PC's to activate?  We've tried everything we know.

    Desperate;

    Edwin.

  • Hello Prime Webmaster,

Downgrading to Windows XP isn't something we normally support here in the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) forum.  Here is some information Carey (MVP) posted previously.

    How to downgrade:

Install a copy of Windows XP Professional with the product key that
came with that copy, and then when you come to the activation screen -- which
is near the end of the installation process -- select the "activate by phone"
option rather than the online method. You'll likely end up talking with
a live rep; tell him that you're downgrading from Vista to XP, and give
him the Vista product key. The rep will walk you through the rest of
    the procedure.

Note: Windows Vista Home Premium and Vista Basic are not eligible
    for downgrade rights.

  • I appriciate your reply.

The problem is that I'm not getting Product Activation to do this for me.  Last time I called the guy got mad and hung up on me.

I will try it once again, though.  Thank you.
