VLK not Genuine or Genuine...depends on which Microsoft message you believe RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a VLK for Office 2003, its a genuine copy, yet we are getting error messages about non-genuine software on a number of PC's. This has alarmed many people. The odd thing is, when we run the Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool, it comes back telling us that the S/Ware is genuine...(See below for details)

  • Hello PaulatPandA,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Data-->
Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - 114 Blocked VLK 2
    Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 - 100 Genuine
    OGA Version: Registered, 2.0.48.0
    Signed By: Microsoft
    Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-230-1

Your computer has two office product installations, Office Professional 2003 which is showing as a Volume Licensing edition installed with a blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK), and a separate Volume Licensing edition of just the Outlook 2003 application, which is reporting as genuine.

You mentioned that you have paperwork--hopefully these are current and valid Volume Licensing Agreements (VLA) to cover two products:  Office Professional 2003 and Office Outlook 2003.  Note that the VLAs are essential; just having a product key printed on a sticker, or hand written somewhere, does not allow the use of that VLK.

Assuming you have valid VLAs, let's follow these steps:
    1.  Download and run the Magical Jellybean Keyfinder (a safe program that has been around for years) to extract the VLK from this installation of Office Professional 2003.  You will find the VLK ends with 3HFDY.
    2.  Compare this reported VLK with the VLK issued to your organization on the VLA.  If a valid VLA, they should be different.
    3.  Change the nongenuine VLK in the installed Office to the valid VLK on your VLA by following the instructions in this MS KB article:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/895456
    4.  After installation has completed, activate Office normally.
    5.  Restart the computer twice, then visit www.microsoft.com/genuine to clear the OGA Notifier cache and ensure that your organization's VLK validates properly.

Repeat this procedure on the rest of your computers showing as having nongenuine Office.

Post back to let us know how it worked out! :-)

Still the question remains as to why, when I have all the paperwork in front of me...very strange
