How bad did I mess up? RRS feed

  • Question

  • A waitress friend of mine brought me her son's Dell laptop because it had boot and sometimes handup problems. They had no disks. Ok, here goes,..I used my XP Pro disk to try to do a repair, that's all, just a boot repair. Everything went real smooth until it ask for an unlock key. My heart went to the floor. I forgot all about Dell puters having an unlock key on the bottom of the puter. I installed my key. Now the puter is doing a 30 day count down to shut down. What can I do to make this right by all parties. The laptop still starts as a Dell laptop and seems to work fine. Can I change the registration number back to the one on the bottom. Do registry the software as being on a Dell laptop?? I have no idea how much of it is installed on the laptop. My CD is for XP Pro, and the laptop shows just XP is the OS. OK, I have said enough. Now it's your turn to jump on me and tell me what to do. Sorry,..my intentions were good.

  • Hello paul 43,

You wrote, "My CD is for XP Pro, and the laptop shows just XP is the OS."

I am reading this as "The laptop Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) reads XP Home Edition and I installed XP Pro."  If that's so, the best way to Get Genuine is for the friend to contact Dell, order a Dell Operating System Reinstallation disc, and install Windows using that disc.

Order from Dell at this page:  http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/backupcd_form?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

OTOH, if the laptop's CoA reads XP Professional, since you have already installed XP Pro on it, you can just change the product key to the one on the laptop's CoA by using the Product Key Updater Utility here:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=45668
