getting a Windows 7 - this copy is not genuine error RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was using an MSDN key from my previous company to update my Windows 7 to an Ultimate.  I switched companies, and as such got the "not genuine" error message.  I inputted an MSDN key from my new company, but still getting this error.  Need to know why.

  • Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt

Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc

(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
    net start sppsvc
    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear.

You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use your new one.

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

  • followed the instructions.  As soon as I enter in slui.exe, a dialog box came up (about 1 second later) and said that the key (my new key) was not genuine.

Went into the product key input again (slui.exe 3) and put in the same new key again, the one that ends in -YGYP6.

After a few seconds, the app came back and said that the key was not valid, even though it was generated from my company MSDN.

Here is the new MGADiag output:

  • I didn't reboot, so I rebooted,  got a slightly different dialog saying that the activation period had ended and for me to validate my ID.  Nope, ID was not valid.  Here is the mgadiag.exe output after the reboot, not sure if there is much difference:
