Home Server Won't Boot, No OS Found RRS feed

  • Question

  • Bad night. Wife dropped the laptop and WHS stopped working.

An information window on my main computer said something like "Server was updated and needs to restart". I did nothing to address a restart and basically ignored this.

When I checked my WHS, it could not find and OS to boot. Checked to make sure the correct drive was my boot drive and that all HD were being recognized in BIOS. Then I did a disk check on the boot drive and checked smart data. No physical problems found with the drive.

So I believe that something with the last update (on 1/26/11) has corrupted the OS.

After reading through the forum posts I believe that:

Need to do a recovery. The recovery is a lengthy process. No data (or back ups) will be lost.

Any recommendations before I start? Thanks in advance.

  • Connected new system drive and original data drives.

Setup gave me the option to restore. No backup will be restored only data.

Completed setup, but error at the end of "unable to complete restore".

I decided to transfer share files manually.

From my experience, don't waste your time doing a restore when the system drive fails. All of your backups are gone, shared data can be copied.

Do a fresh install and transfer the files manually.
