  • 1) Where is the Database Store

For Canada, the database is stored in our North American datacenter in Virginia.  Over time, we'll be adding more datacenters in each geography.

     2) What is the process to move from CRM 4.0 On Premise to CRM 2011 Online

As Frank mentioned, Scribe or another data migration tool can be used for this.

    3) When will the full blown version of CRM 2011 Online will be out

We are targeting open signups in January 2011.

    4) Do you have white paper on the issues that we will encounter when moving from CRM On Premise to CRM ONline?

Hm, I don't know of any whitepapers like that. In general, the differences will be:

    • Must have an internet connection
    • Must use Windows Live ID instead of ActiveDirectory (see below)
    • Technology-wise, you will not have access to custom ASPX pages, custom workflow assemblies, or fully-trusted plugins.  The alternatives are, in order, Azure or another hosting provider, refactoring workflow assemblies into sandbox plugins, and making sure that your plugins will run in sandbox mode.

    5) What is the Licensing Aspect ?

Can you be more specific?  We can bill via credit card, invoice, or Enterprise Agreement, and you'll need to pay a monthly fee per user.

    6) Can CRM Online Integrate with Active Directory (to prevent our users from using windows live ID?

Not presently.  We're targeting a future release for AD integration, but the pieces were not ready for us to take on in the initial release of CRM 2011.

    7) How will single Sign On be setup?

Since we don't have AD integration yet, the short answer is that you won't have single sign-on.

    8) Will you give us access to your envionrment to upload the Database?

As Frank said, it's API access only.  There are some good data migration tools built into CRM itself, and there are also partner solutions like Scribe available.

  • Some response:

CRM Online database is store in the Microsoft Data Center (not accessible directly) only via the application and their web services/SDK.  Can't upload an OnPremise database.

Moving from On Premise CRM 4.0 or CRM 2011 is via standard data migration process.  We use the Scribe Software data migration tool for this.

  • Regarding the Custom SSRS Reports - you will need to us Fetch XML for CRM Online 2011.

Regarding the question of licene movement from on premise to online. We have raised this question ourselves to various MS executives and account managers and found that there is no formal or even informal programs. I would recommend you pose this question to the CRM Online MS Sales person that supports your area.

  • Thanks Jerry.  And to cover JD's other questions:

    >What is your feedback if we upgrade CRM 4.0 to CRM 2011 On Premise and later on Migrate 2011 to CRM Online ?  Will this be a good approach to go with?

This will certainly help you understand what changes you'd have to make to any customizations you've built.  From a data perspective, it's not required.

    >When do you'll intend to come out with AD Integration - will it be for CRM 2011 or a later version?

We're actively working on the timeline.  We're anxious to release it, but I can't speak to what version we'll target.

    >Are online Customers entitled to Upgrades or is this a seperate fee?

Your subscription fees entitle you to the most-current version of CRM, one of the huge benefits of going with Online.  Online customers have 12 months to make the switch to the new version, so it's not like we'll force you overnight - but we highly encourage rapid adoption of the latest service.

  • Matt/Frank

Thank you for your prompt response. I have a couple of additional questions if you could assist.

What is your feedback if we upgrade CRM 4.0 to CRM 2011 On Premise and later on Migrate 2011 to CRM Online ?  Will this be a good approach to go with?

How does CRM Online deal with Custom SSRS Reports - do we have to rebuild the reports using Fetch XML?

How does Microsoft deal with Customers who have already purchased an ON Premise License and would like to move to CRM Online - Do these customers get a discount?

When do you'll intend to come out with AD Integration - will it be for CRM 2011 or a later version?

Are online Customers entitled to Upgrades or is this a seperate fee?

    Thxs
