"Online activation cannot be completed at this time" on all our deployed systems! RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I'm a system builder and for the past three days, *none* of our systems have been able to activate online - we receive "Online activation cannot be completed at this time". We assumed Microsoft's activation servers were offline, as attempts to complete a phone activation result in disgustingly high hold times which eventually result in disconnections after waiting around a 1/2 hour.

However, after reading a few other threads, I was wondering if this is related to our slipstreaming SP3 into our OPK deployment. Is there a bug in SP3 relating to OPK deployment?

From what I understand, service packs don't require the Windows Genuine Advantage notifier to be be on the system indicating if the machines are genuine or not.  It's possible that what needs to be activated online is something else or that the network might have been temporarily down.

Please download and run this tool:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 (make sure you do this as administrator)  run the tool and copy and paste the results back onto this thread to take a closer look one of the machines.

  • Lori, thank you for responding. It might not have been clear in the above post, but this is after resealing the OPK install and the end user is booting up for the first time... so it is expected that the end user will have to authorize the system. Prior to slipstreaming SP3 into the configuration set, SP2 authorizations went successfully.

I'll run the tool on the next system I encounter tomorrow... and possibly diagnose things further.

  • Hopefully I can still get help on this issue. I apologize for taking so long to respond, but we became so busy and discontinued deploying XP w/SP3 as this activation issue was causing us too much trouble. Now that I have more time on my hands, I'm looking back into the issue.

I've run the utility and I've received the following results:

A few of us have posted to the official OEM system builder forums, however they seem to have been abandoned by Microsoft personel since Vista was released. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • William,

Interesting situation. To my knowledge there isn't a problem with the activation server. Let me do some research into this situation and touch back with you.

  • William,

I did some more research. Have you read "After you create Windows XP Service Pack 3 slipstreamed media, your product key is not accepted" located @ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950722 ?

  • Is there no way to fix this without a reinstall of the OS?!
I'm having the same issue and reinstalling the OS would be a major plain at this stage.

  • Stephen,

I appreciate your response. This behaviour occurs after a sysprep reseal, so the end user is greeted by the request to enter a product key and then activate their product. So, this is *their* product key, a new product key. I've tried both SP2c product keys and pre-SP2c product keys, and both respond with, "Online activation cannot be completed at this time." Phone activation will work, however it's very time consuming and annoying.

There are others on the official Microsoft OEM System Builder support forums that are also experiencing this problem, and have gone back to SP2 deployment, however I'd prefer my clients have all the latest patches and updates before using their system. Also, our repair department uses our deployment set to properly install Windows XP 'the microsoft' way (as opposed to using integrated or nlited discs) on systems with valid product keys.

Perhaps there's an updated sysprep, or some other aspect of the OPK Preinstallation tools that I require?

    Thank you,

    William Gault

  • William,

Unfortunately I don't have a good answer Sad. Below are two forums that are better geared for this question. Use the search function on both sites and maybe you can located the answer. If not please post the same information again but in these forums for a resolution. I would be interested in the outcome.

    Take care
