delete old backup and create new???

Question
-
Hi
i backed-up one of my PCs in my circle to my central USB HD. Unfortunately, i let it backup using the defaults and it backed up many files I simply don't need - and it is taking up too much space on the HD. i only want to backup the my documents folders for each user - nothing else. How can i delete ( or modify) the original backup and then allow a new backup with only the data i need. I want to reclaim the space on the HD as i have 3 computers backing up to it.
a related question- when this HD gets a little tight on space..can i retire the old usb HD and buy a new usb drive, assign it the same drive letter and then have WLOC just continue on as previously??? or do i need to revise the whole backup plan to accomodate the new HD???
thanks

See this FAQ for how to delete backups - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1698096&SiteID=2
Once you delete the backups you will need to start over and begin a new backup set for each PC.
When you switch to another drive, even if it is the same Drive letter, a new full backup will need to be performed to the drive from each PC.

steve:
thanks Did not see FAQs..but they helped
one odd item... i took ownership of the backup folder (very weird and lots of unexpected warnings in Vista...had to take ownership of each subfolder) and deleted it. then i set the automatic backup on the PC...It said the backup was complete (but it gave the date of the older backup that had been deleted!!).. after several attempts i ran a manual backup thru WLOC then set it to automatically backup.
my guess is that there had been no change in the files from the previous backup, so it just did nothing; look at catalog and saw no change in files. even though the backup files were deleted on the central backup drive!!! A little confusing and misleading. But i think it is OK.. Might want to add to the FAQ that following the deletion of the files...you must do a manual WLOC backup, or it just does nothing.
thanks

Hi Steve,
I have followed your direction step by step and I am still not able to delete the back ups. When I right click on properties of the One Care back up it does not give me a security tab. I am at a loss. Now I can not even open the backup file. It keeps telling me access denied. HELP!

Once you delete the backup, you do need to perform a new full backup. Letting it continue where it left off means that it simply looks to the internal database and looks for new and changed files even though the old backups are all gone.
I would actually expect it to want you to reconfigure the backup location if the folder was removed. It sounds like it is a bug and not just an instruction re-write.

Same here; it's telling me I don't have permission to delete. I've use the command prompt, rebooted in Safe Mode, changed permissions and sharing for all the files and folders, and still can't delete the OneCare files, and I have my profile set as Administrator. I'm just hoping Vista grants me "permission" to reformat my own HD....Sunday, December 9, 2007 4:07 PM

After rummaging through the files & folders "security" settings in the OneCare directories, I find that there is an option for "Special permissions" that apparently I do not have permission to alter as the owner and Administrator of my own system, hence, I suppose, I could not delete any of the files or directories. I formatted the drive and backed up my system with the new program (McAfee) - that did appear to put a stake through OneCare's heart, though I suppose I can never be sure. Un-bloody likely that I'll ever install OneCare again as my backup....

I'm just hoping Vista grants me "permission" to reformat my own HD.... Completely agree. I had this problem half a year ago and received some help from a Dutch M$ lady. Fortunately I had "split" my external HD into 2 drives. My overflowing backupfolder was in one drive and I reconfigured OneCare to make a full new backup in the other (by no means easy for non-techies!). In the end, following the same advice as given in FAQ, I was able to remove the backup and catalog files, but not the folders, nor the "DONOT REMOVE--" files. The M$ lady could only advise me to connect the external drive to another computer - invalidating the ownership issues - and delete the remnants.
Personally, I would think the obvious path for M$ to follow would be to add a maintenance option, but then, I am merely a dumb user...

JaapV, you are certainly *not* dumb! The ability to manage the backups from within OneCare, aging off older data and limiting the space used should exist inside OneCare. I hope that this will happen in some future update!

I know I'm not dumb. I was merely trying to find some solace in sarcasm. Actually, your reply "I hope ... in some future update" fortifies my pessimism. Some nine months ago, the M$ helpdesk lady gave me a similarly evasive reaction and look at all the improvements in the meantime.
If no useful update arrives, then I will switch to MacAfee, come renewal time.
