2005 hp mini, got malware, getting validation errors now RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I've looked through all of the other links here related to this and I think I have to ask for specific help.

I've got a 2005 hp mini that came factory installed with windows 7.  It's worked fine for many years but I picked up a malware tonight, either in a corrupt nvidia update, or a mozilla update.  The malware was redirecting my browser, making the computer start really slow, blikning the screen on and off for long periods, and popping up windows validation errors once windows loads.

It turned out to be a few different malwares, one called zoomify.  I used malwarebots to remove all of it, did the root kit thing, and it's all back to normal but I'm still getting the validation error.

I'm wondering if the messages are fake and caused by more malware and windows is fine, or if I need to reactivate.  I ran the online validation tool and it wants me to buy a new version of windows.  I'm able to download windows updates though?

I would try to enter the validation key but the letters on the sticker wore off years ago and after 8 years of flawless service, I finally threw the box away last year.

I really like this little computer and my cad programs all use windows so I don't want to have to switch to linux.  I'd really appreciate it if this could be resolved.

    Thanks,

    Michael

  • The install seems to have 'lost' the licenses required to self-activate the OEM_SLP Key in use.

The normal solution is to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker - but you say that you are unable to read the Key there.

In such circumstances, the only things you can do are

    1) recreate the Licensing Store - in case it's a minor software problem causing the misread

    2) try updating the BIOS to the latest available Win7-compliant one, from the manufacturer's website

    3) Contact the manufacturer direct, and see if they can provide assistance to correct the SLIC table

    4) a reformat and reinstall using the manufacturer's recovery media

    5) purchase a new license for Windows (or a new computer)

In your case, we've already done #1, and #2 and #3 don't apply - which leaves you with #4 and #5.

There *may* be an alternative solution though, if you are patient and persistent.

Attempt Telephone Activation, and speak to an operator - they will tell you that your current Key is blocked (they should then ask for confirmation of your Product Key). Explain to them your problem, that you need to change the Key to the one on your sticker,
but that the sticker is unreadable (could they please supply a replacement Key?). Hopefully they will ask for documentary proof of the sticker, in the form of an email with a picture of the affected sticker - and you can proceed from there.

Sometimes it takes two or three calls before you get an operator who actually knows and uses this procedure - but I know that it can and does happen.

  • To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool

(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

     Once saved, run the tool.

Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.

To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

      - in your own thread, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

  • Sorry I missed the sticky. Took the battery out and all of the doors off and there is no sticker on the inside, only the one on the bottom and it's worn to a green blob with two chrome stripes in it.

I really appreciate your help. :)

  • You have a Trusted Store Tamper - often caused by malware.

Please download and install  Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from  http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM Premium' at the end of the installation -  and update it, then run a full scan  in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

    Quarantine everything it finds

    If you've already done that...

Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt

Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc

(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

    net start sppsvc

    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.

You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report.

(Note: the Line 'CD %win......\SoftwareProtectionPlatform' is all on one line - it may be broken in the Forum listing)

  • Thanks!  I had to dig into my dos memories to get to the right directory but I did everything you posted successfully up until the last step.

Two issues.  The windows validation page just hangs indefinitely.  I let it sit for ten minutes and nothing.  I disabled adblock, allowed scripting and popups on mozilla.  It hangs in IE too.

The next possible issue is that the sticker on my computer is totally worn out.  I can't see anything on it and have no idea where I put the paper that I wrote it down on years ago.

    Any other ideas?

  • The issues was my wifi.  Semi parked between me and the router.  I just ran it again and it says everything's fine.

I don't have a lot, but can I send you a few bucks worth of bitcoin for your time?  I really appreciate it!

(Edit: Upon restart, it asked me to enter or purchase a new product key, so something's still wrong.)

    Here's the new diag file.
