  • Hello CeeZaleo,

You wrote, "I am trying to use the product key at the bottom of my laptop but I see that the product key that shows on here is something different."

It is expected and normal for the product key on the Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) afixed to a computer to be totally different from the one shown by the mgadiag report.  The product key in the report is the standard Compaq XP Home deployment key and is used on thousands and thousands of computers built every day by Compaq.  The product key on the CoA is a unique alternate key for Windows XP Home Edition meant to be used only under special circumstances.

You wrote, "I am trying to use the product key at the bottom of my laptop....."  May I ask for what?  If you are trying to use the product key for Windows XP Home that is on the CoA on your laptop to activate or convert a preinstalled Trial of Office 2007, please know that the XP Home product key on the CoA is only for XP and is not supposed to work to activate Office.

If you are trying to activate a preinstalled Trial of Office, look for the Office Activation Assistant program installed in the Start Menu of your new netbook computer.  If the Trial period has elapsed and Office is running in reduced functionality mode (for example, cannot save existing docs or create new docs), then you will have to purchas a perpetual license for Office (in the form of a Product Key from Microsoft) in order for Office to resume working with full functionality again.

Assuming you want to continue to use Office with its full functionality, Yes.

  • Hello Dan,

I think I may have been trying to activate a preinstalled trial of office. When I open any Office program such as Word or Powerpoint it asks for the product key, now it is telling me that I only have 9 times to use the program without the product key. So I will have to buy the Office program?

    Thank you,

    CeeZaleo
