uTorrent: Trouble accessing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have uTorrent installed as a service on my WHS, and it works fine.  But to use it, I need to be logged in to my Remote Desktop Connection(RDC).  When I try to access it from Webui or the Home Server Console, I am only successful if I stay logged in to my RDC.

The problem I have with that is that after entering my credentials in RDC a number of times I get an error message that I have exceeded the maximum number of connections, and I have to reset the active users by disconnecting them in the Terminal Services Manager.  It seems the only way to avoid that error message is to log out each time I use RDC.

  • That functionality (limited connections via remote desktop) is by design. Windows Server includes a feature called "Remote Desktop for Administration" which allows two simultaneous remote desktop connections, plus one connection to the console session on the server. When you log in and then disconnect, you use one of those two connections up until it's reset.

The only solution, if you need to be able to run more than two remote desktop connections (and remember that the Windows Home Server console works through Remote Desktop as well, so it uses a connection) is to install and license Terminal Services, which I would strongly recommend against, as it's unsupported and Microsoft's vision for Windows Home Server doesn't include a need to use remote desktop for anything except diagnostic procedures in extremis.

  • I have the exact same problem and it is extremely annoying.  I suppose the only work-around is to re-install utorrent under the Administrator account.  I am guessing you created a new admin account for utorrent install originally.  You can uninstall and reinstall under the main administrator account and access only that account through RDP?  Not ideal but...

  • Did you try re-installing uTorrent under the main internet account, and if so how did it work?  Does it stop the "maximum number of accesses exceeded" error message from ocurring?

  • Basically, I did a server recovery (keeps your data but erases disk CSmile.  I then reinstalled utorrent under the main admin account.  This completely solves the problem.  It is said that having a separate account for applications such as utorrent is a more secure way of doing things hence the suggestion to create a separate account.  That may be so but I think the security difference is small, especially if your utorrent account is also an administrator.

Also, did not install utorrent as a service as that just did not do anything for me.  I don't restart my machine much so that's a non-issue for me.

Also I read somewhere a question about having utorrent scheduler included in the add-in.  I would suggest using the Web UI instead of the add-in to manage utorrent as it has way more functionality, including scheduler access.
