External Hardrive Won't Power Save because of Virus & Spyware Monitoring RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased a Maxtor Onetouch 4 external hardrive.  The unit will not go into power-saving mode when Windows Live OneCare Virus & Spyware Monitoring is on.  When I turn off the Virus & Spyware Monitoring, the unit will go into  power mode.  I contacted Maxtor about the hardrive and they tell me to contact Microsoft about the problem.  Does anyone know what settings I need to change to get this unit to go into the power-saving mode?

  • There is no setting in OneCare to do this, but perhaps if you set the drive to be excluded from Virus and Spyware scanning, it will work. Did you install the Maxtor software with the drive? I suspect that the software and OneCare together may be the issue.

To exclude the drive from scans, open OneCare, click on change settings, virus and spyware tab, Exclusions button, add the drive to the list of exclusions by using the Folder button.
