  • Question

  • Can someone please help.

I have been using Vista home for nearly 2 months. I validated windows and was working normally until yesterday. I have the same issue as others on the forum where Vista will not let me log in with full functionality, I have tried some of the sugestions in the various threads with the same issue with no luck I managed to downliad the diagnostic tool and here are the results.

Can someone with far greater knowledge than me please decipher what this means so I may be able to us my pc properly. At the moment I can do nothing. When I log in there is an error message and I can go online to try resolve it. Each time I do this I get told my Windows is not a valid license. I seem to be stuck in a vicious loop.

  • Hi andrew_j_c,

Your Diagnostic Report is telling me there is allot going on with your copy of Vista.

    1) The code 0x80070426 listed for the lines "Online Validation Code:" and "Cached Validation Code:" tells me that the Software Licensing service has stopped. Normally I would provide steps to re-start the service, but in this situation, it will not work. See #3 below.

    2) The line: "TTS Error: M:20071020154404952-" This is the Tamper Time Stamp and normally this tells me there is a program that is Incompatible with Vista and that program is trying to do something that Vista see as tampering with secured system files. In your case, I beleive the tamper was casued by whatever happened that made the 2 files malformed (shown below in #3)

    3) And the biggest problem are the 2 system files listed under the line "File Scan Data-->"

    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\Slsvc.exe
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\Slc.dll

This tells me that the files Slsvc.exe and Slc.dll are malformed in some way. Either modified or corrupted. And since Slsvc.exe is the file that runs the Software Licensing service, it's no wonder the service has stopped and since Slc.exe is uesd by Vista to determaine it's license status, this is why the Diagnostic Report shows "Validation Status: Invalid License".

I have two suggestions to potentialy resolve your issue.

    A) Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933928/en-us and click on the 32-bit download package. This should replace the 2 malformed files. If this update has already been installed (in which case you will receive a message similar to "This update does not apply to this system" in which case) or  if the update does not resolve the issue, then you will need to go to option B

    B) I suggest using the Windows Restore process, provided by the computer Manufacturer, to restore Vista to the state it was when it left the factory.  All Large Computer Manufacturer ship their Windows Pre-installed computers with a Windows Restore CD (or a Windows Restore partition on the hard drive).

The reason I say this is that I see from you Diagnostic Report that Vista came Pre-installed on the computer and that the computer was manufactured by a Large Computer Manufacturer (such as Dell, HP and so on). I know this because in the diagnostic report, it says "Windows License Type: COA SLP". When a Large Computer Manufacturer builds a computer with Vista pre-installed, the computer comes with 2 Product Keys.  From the factory, it comes with a specal Product Key, already in Vista, that does not require Activation, (but only works on computers from that Manufacturer) and that is known as"Windows License Type: OEM SLP". The computer also comes with a Product Key located on the Certificate of Authenticity sticker on your computer and it is known as "Windows License Type: COA SLP". If Vista came re-installed on a computer that was built by a medum or small company, the report would say "Windows License Type: OEM System Builder" and if Vista was bought in a retail box, it would say "Windows License Type: Retail".

Many many thanks for replying to my thread. I was able to resolve my problem following your solution A above. I have been able to boot into my PC and all is well, for now.

I am worried I may come accross this same problem again, is this likely if I have successfully downloaded the fix you directed me to? I

am concerned by your statement above, "Your Diagnostic Report is telling me there is allot going on with your copy of Vista". Are there any other issues you may be able to tell me about ?

Again many thanks for your help on the matter.

    Regards

    Andrew
