Upgrade CRM 4.0 -> 2011 - Best Practices RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Forum

I have Full Server (Win2k8, SQL 2k8, CRM 4.0) and a dedicated DC with AD. On the CRM server we have just two orgs (Prod, Training). So what's best for upgrading that server? It shouldn't disturb the production environment... So, cloning the CRM server? Is that a problem for the DC/AD if twice the same org/users/guids access the same AD?

    Thanks for your hints?

  • Hi CRMBE,

You need to get another win2k8 and SQL 2k8 server set up.

      • Install CRM 2011 on the new servers
      • Start testing the upgrade by, backing up the current production and training databases and restore them to the new CRM 2011 SQL server
      • Import one organization each time and test see if all customizations and data looks alright.
      • Fix any issues
      • When going live, stop the CRM 4 services, backup the existing database and import this recent version to the new CRM 2011
      • make sure DNS points at the new location

I think this is the approach you need to take if you don't want to disturb the production environment.

    Hope it helps

  • Ok, thanks!

    I'll do the following:

    Install clean 2011 environment

Copy prod DB and connect to 2011 environment

    Train the users

Copy the latest prod DB and go live

    ;-)

  • Will not cause issues, the CRM organization names generate unique GUID's for the AD groups.
