Sorry about you problems. But would you please provide more details? What size are these troubled pictures in? How many pictures are suffering this problem? What sync mode were you using when syncing your folders?
I can only guess what had happened to your pictures, before having enough information:
Files may sometimes be broken by hardware issues, or be copied incorrectly with data transfer problem. Such issues randomly happen no matter what OS and what software you are using. You may even need to check if some of your hardware (especially your hard disk) has problems. The files could be broken before you sync them in SyncToy.
And about recovering your pictures, please make sure if the pictures were broken in both of the 2 folders. If both of them are broken, I have no ideas, for overwritten files are not easy to recover. (I heard some people could repair broken picture files, if there are only a few bytes are incorrect in each file)
