WHS: System drive failed & no Reinstall option on new drive? RRS feed

  • Question

  • WHS not booting. (3 Sata drives)

    Tried reinstall = crash

    No reinstall option

Checked drive on another computer = errors galore and bad clicking

Put old reformated drive in it's place = still NO reinstall option

saved DE data on all three drives to another drive on another computer (drive 0, bad drive, too)

    Read forums for two days

    Unhooked two "data" drives

Installed WHS, Hooked up data drives, reinstall option available now

    Reinstalled

Works BUT data drives are seen as "NOT Added"

Installed chipset drivers for MB (3)= SMBus, Nvidia  Network, and display adapter

Problem = data is there but WHS doesn't see it.

Could it be that the Nvidia drivers need to be loaded during install... it finds my drives before I installed them, they are just not "added"?

Seems WHS should be able to handle the physical crash of the primary drive (esp since there is NO backup option for the server itself)

Thanks in advance for any advice..just trying to avoid manually copying data files.

It seems you should have stopped when you had a no reinstall option see these threads http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/whssoftware/thread/2f5d072d-88e3-456e-8eb5-d360b0d01837/ and

http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whssoftware/thread/d7e48a32-9d4e-425d-9bf3-0fe796a07afe/  If you have already done a new installtion, WHS see's those existing drives as drives that need to be added to tthe pool and will re format them for use which inturn will whipe out your data. As far as the other issues you are lis=ting ie installing chipset drivers would have nothing really to do with it. And yes WHS can handle the Physical Crash of the system drive it happend to me. See my post http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whshardware/thread/3f125481-e6fd-49bc-9c14-e7095fc4f51a.

  • Thanks Mark, I had read those but they did help much.  WHS sees my SATA drives, it just doesn't see them as WHS "added" drives, when I do the reinstall.  Not sure what drivers I would even need to add at the initial "add drivers" page.
