Hello Klattsy,
Based on the information you provided, it would seem that the XP you purchased on eBay is suspect at best.
Enter the product key on the CoA into a search engine. If you get pages of hits, that's not a good sign.
Please check two more things on the CD itself. First, is the hologram a very thin label affixed to the top surface of the CD, ot is it embedded within the plastic of the CD? If a label on the top surface of the CD, that's bad. Second, check the setupp.ini file in the \i386 folder of the CD. This is a small text file with two sections. In the Pid= section, what are the last three characters? If not the letters "OEM" that's bad.
If you have one or more of the indicators on the CD, then you'll want to contact your eBay seller and request a full refund as they sold you counterfeit software. If the seller will not make good, pursue the remedies available to you via eBay and PayPal as appropriate.
If you cannot get satisfaction from either the seller or eBay, follow the WGA Notifications Utility prompts you are seeing and choose the option to prepare a piracy report and to submit your materials to Microsoft for evaluation as hi quality countertfeits and possible complimentary replacement. If you choose this option, please keep us posted as to how your situation turns out.

Thanks Dan,I did a search and yes, I get results, all in a different language :)The hologram doesn't run flush with the CD, there is a silver edge around it, and there seems to be a poorly cut out sticker on it. I can't believe I didn't see it earlier. In the setupp.ini file, it says Pid=55274270So I guess thats bad.I can't get onto my eBay seller as the transaction is too old to show up, and he never left feedback so I can't get his name. I do have the bank details though. And the recipet of bank transfer (stupid me didn't use Paypal).Have prepared a Piract Report and will post registered this weekend. Hope this can help as I really can't afford a new OS at the moment.Thanks,Mark.Friday, September 4, 2009 9:47 PM

Hello Klattsy,
The CD seems to have all the "charm" of a counterfeit....
Keep us posted when you hear back from Microsoft! :-)

Well, it's been 5 weeks and still no word. I sent an email on Monday but no reply either.Worst bit is I have lost my case number and can't quote it!I guess Microsoft can ignore emails now that Win7 is coming out. I half expected to get a reply "Mark, don't worry about us sending you a replacement copy - just download the Win7 RC and use for free until March 2010."They say allow 6 weeks so I shouldn't be so negative...yet :)Mark.Thursday, October 15, 2009 5:45 AM

Hello Klattsy,
Hang in there, it could take some time since you are Down Under. They do say allow 4-6 weeks.....maybe the counterfeit crew is on "walkabout" LOL
Just as an FYI, here in the States we have had people post back that they got their replacements in less than two weeks.
Keep us posted...if the 6 week deadline comes and goes and still no Word (pun), post back here and maybe we'll be able to help out somehow :-)

Ok, I got my DVD just after the 6th week :)
Question is, the case says it's best to do a clean install (incase of malicious software) but I would prefer not to have to reinstall all my games and transfer my massive amount of photos...is there a way I can install over the top of my existing Windows?
Can I just type the key found with my new software straight into my Windows install now?
Was hoping to use these directions: http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189500364
Thanks,

Hello Klattsy,
Thanks for keeping us updated on your situation :-)
The reason why Microsoft recommends a clean installation is that typically nongenuine installations of XP are apt to have malware embedded within the installation that may be difficult or almost impossible to detect and remove, so doing the repartitioning and reformatting of a clean installation eliminates that potential hazard.
If you simpy cannot take that advice, then try the Product Key Updater utility, which allows you to update the product key from your old nongenuine one to your new genuine one: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=45668
