Remote desktop connection problems over the internet RRS feed

  • Question

  • For several years I have been using Remote Desktop to connect my Vista laptop to other computers on my network running Vista (Business) or WIN 2000 Server. I have connected over a LAN and over the internet using a VPN with no problems. Recently the internet connection to several of the computers will no longer work.

    The LAN connection still works fine to all computers. Also, it is not a VPN issue - I can still log on to the network and connect over the VPN to one WIN 2000 Server (which has Terminal Services in Application Server mode);

    For the Vista computers and another WIN 2000 Server (which has Terminal Services in Remote Administration mode) I now get a message that Remote Desktop is unable to connect.

    The problem is not related to the Vista laptop. I have also previously used an XP running Terminal Services client to connect to all the computers over the VPN and that also now works only with the WIN 2000 Server in Application Server mode.

    I think this must be the result of a recent Windows update but I have no idea which one or how to correct it. All the computers are fully up to date with Windows update. AS far as I can see all the remote access settings are still fine (and must be since RDC works just fine over the LAN)

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
