Live Mesh and Wave 4 RRS feed

  • Question

  • With Wave 4 it appears that Live Sync is going to be the supported desktop syncing product from MS.  Will Live Mesh seamlessly integrate with it, or will I have to uninstall Live Mesh, install Live Sync and then set everything up on all my different machines?

We have no details on the migration/upgrade path as the beta has not yet been made available. Actually, to clarify, Live Sync and Live Mesh will become one in Wave4, according to reports.

  • According to Paul Thurrott (http://www.winsupersite.com/live/wlwave4_sync.asp), "When you install the new Windows Live Essentials on a PC on which Live Mesh is already installed, you'll be notified that Live Mesh needs to be uninstalled. (The Essentials installer will do this for you.) And whatever synced folders you've configured will need to be re-configured later for the new Live Sync."

I, for one, will therefore continue to use Mesh until they clutch it away from my cold, dead fingers. The 2GB limit is a total deal-breaker for me until they add more storage.

  • Wow... It looks like the new "Live Sync" in wave 4 is a disaster.   I was looking forward to some exciting updates to Live Mesh but from what I see this is a major step backwards.    I wan't more than 2GB of storage,  I want to have synced folders look different, and I liked the little side dock bar thingy on the side of Windows explorer.

I wonder if they are removing the ability to share folders with other user like you can with Live Mesh.   I sure hope they didn't remove that.   I work for a Microsoft partner and we use shared folders with them daily for sharing documentation and files.

I am with Angarita...  No Wave 4 for me...  I will stick with Live Mesh for as long as I can.

  • The current Live Sync allows folders to be shared with other users, so I am quite sure that this capability will exist in the next version.

I do know that those of us who are using more than 2 gigs of online Live Desktop storage are not going to be happy, as will XP users, since the Wave 4 versions of Live Essentials will not work on Windows XP. I assume that XP users will continue to use the current Live Sync client, though I may be wrong and that client will be discontinued due to the architecture changes in Wave 4.

Too bad they didn't answer the most important question of all: whether we can purchase more storage, get our full 25 gigs of Skydrive on sync.

Looks like they pulled that link.  But they did answer that question actually.  They said no you can't buy more storage but that is something they are considering for a future release.

ugh, I figured. I love Microsoft but I am really angry at them, heartbroken actually, for ruining arguably one of their best products in the last couple of years. I get that this stuff will be coming in future releases, but what I don't understand is what they have been working on for the last 2 years then. The only improvements in the new Sync are that you can synchronize bigger files, more folders, you can save settings for IE and Office, plus Remote Desktop enhancements. That hardly seems like features that needed two-year development, especially when they did not improve storage [ruined it actually], there is no mobile sync (forget about FrameIt or Xbox or Zune) and probably did not improve the community's other requests such as Deltasync and better batch conflict resolution.

  • It seems to me Msoft are heading slowly towards what we want; I have used skydrive, office live, live sync and mesh and probably the most helpful is mesh, because it syncs between computers and has an online site.

The idea would be for skydrive (with 25 g) and office capabilities (which is great) to sync with computers.

Hang on, it's just occured to me, why don't I just use live sync to sync my key folders??

Am I being a bit dim....???
