Virus attack & local tech reinstall leads to "non-genuine" MS Office notification

Question
-
At the end of last year my computer was disabled by a virus and the local tech I hired to fix the problem supposedly did a back up of all the critical files, wiped my hard drive clean, and reinstalled everything from scratch. First thing I discovered was that he had not backed up my music DRM file so all of my purchased music would not play. Now after downloading a recent update from Microsoft (must have been the "genuine certification" software) I'm getting messages that my MS Office programs are not genuine and will be disabled. I have about 10 days to solve this problem. I'm running Windows XP Professional v2002 SP3 and Office Professional Edition 2003. I also own PowerPoint 2003. I have all of the original install disks, but am not sure what will happen if I reinstall using those original disks. I'm hoping there's an easy/safe way to certify my products as genuine (they really are) rather than going through a reinstall of the originals and reinstall of all the updates I've done since 2003.Saturday, June 26, 2010 2:09 PM

Hello wiseplaice,
Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:
OGA Data-->
Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - 114 Blocked VLK 2
OGA Version: Registered, 2.0.48.0
Signed By: Microsoft
Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-230-1Confirming that your installation of Office Professional 2003 on your Dell Dimension 8250 computer is reporting as a nongenuine installation, because it is a Volume Licensing installation that was done with a widely pirated and now blocked Volume Licensing Product Key.
A "blocked" VLK is one that was issued by Microsoft to a business, educational institution, or governmental agency for their exclusive use in accordance with a Volume Licensing Agreement. (Note that such use does NOT allow the resale of such VLKs.) However, because the VLK may have been reported lost, stolen, or compromised to the internet by the original keyholder, or because the Volume Licensing Agreement has expired, Microsoft has blocked the VLK from further use.
Uninstalling the current nongenuine Office, restarting twice, then installing the Office Professional 2003 that you have should take care of the problem, assuming the Office that you have is Genuine. After uninstalling the nongenuine Office, and before installing your original Office, it would be a good idea to delete the accompanying license file, which is not removed by a normal uninstallation, as it may interfere with Validating the next installaton. On a default Windows and Office 2003 installation the license file is located here: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\Opa11.dat
After installing and activating your orignal Office, rerun the mgadiag utility and paste a fresh report here for a final look-see.

Thank you. One more question before I reinstall...do I need to do anything special to keep my emails and email archive folders in Outlook? I've already lost my address book and contact list (again thanks to the local tech I hired...still have not found a way to recover my address book or contact list, and am currently blocked from building a new contact list, so I'm not worried about losing anything there). Losing my email history would be a bad thing, though.Saturday, June 26, 2010 3:16 PM

Hello wiseplaice,
Typically uninstalling Office and/or Outlook does not delete any saved documents or emails, because these are saved within your User Profile in the c:\documents and settings\your_user_name folder on a default installation of XP, and in c:\users\your_user_name on default installations of Vista and W7.
However, it's never a bad idea to play it safe. For Outlook included in Office 2003, that means doing two things: (1) backing up your Outlook data files (*.pst and if on a MS Exchange system *.ost) and (2) running the Office 2003 Save My Settings Wizard to backup all of the other Outlook settings.
See this MS KB article for details on the Save My Settings Wizard: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826809

Looks like I spoke too soon...now I get an "operation failed" message when I hit "Send/Receive" in Outlook. When I "test account settings" for each of my email accounts, they both pass with flying colors...so I'm not sure why I can't send/receive email. Not sure if this is the right forum for this issue, but if anyone has an answer I'd appreciate it. I did not use the "save my settings" wizard before uninstalling Office because I decided I didn't want to save anything questionable that the local tech might have done. Now perhaps I'm paying the price for not doing that?

Hello wiseplaice,
Yup, looks like you have two Genuine installations of OEM-licensed products installed (Office XP Pro and Pub 2002). Nice work! :-)
Don't forget to go to Microsoft Update and get all the Service Packs and patches.
You know you can install the Office Compatibility Pack and your Office XP will be able to read, edit, save, and print documents saved in the new Office 2007 and up file format. Here's the link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

I also find I cannot add an address book to Outlook. Any clues or a different forum that could help me with Outlook problems? Thanks...Saturday, July 3, 2010 11:22 PM

That's a common first half of an error message with Outlook. Google the complete text of the error and any error code that is displayed. Here's the Outlook forum: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/default.aspx#tab=3
