    it's a 500 gb drive almost 1/2 full.

  • Alright I went too western digital's site and downloaded the Acronis WD copy tool  http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp
It cloned my drive to a 1 TB drive I had . And has booted just fine. According to the how too I'm running CHKDSK /f/r on the new drive as the copy process will also copy the marked bad blocks , this will notice them as healthy and mark them as good.
Will find out tonight if the backup to the WHS works, And it did work just fine on the new drive.

  • "The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block." is that log entry you could not find, I would say.
Bad blocks may cause volume shadow copies to fail, and so the backup will also fail. All drives, which are earlier in the sequence, will be backed up successfully, the faulty drive not.
I would recommend to delete the volume, which contains the faulty block (if necessary backup the data stored on it to a different location). This should map out the faulty block. After that recreate the volume and restore its formerly backed up contents either from the home server by executing ClientRestoreWizard.exe from C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server on this client or copying data back, which you saved manually.
Also reconfigure backup in the console to include the new volume and no longer backup the old one.
Keep an eye on the event log of the machine to see early, if new bad blocks appear - in this case change the disk.

  • The bad block log file is from the events logs on the XP pro machine that won't backup. Harddisk 0 is the main drive with the installed OS on it.

  • If you have run chkdsk /r on that disk, then you should be able to find the reported results in the application event log, source "winlogon". If chkdsk indicates that it corrected errors, I would run it again to see if if finds any more errors to correct; I've observed that it doesn't always find/fix every issue on the first scan.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • I have also seen, that even a marked bad block was enough to leave Volume Shadow Copies in a non functioning condition and therefore WHS Backup for that volume (and all subsequent volumes) fail.

It sounds like it isn't able to do anything with the bad sectors.  I would say the best course of action at this point is to replace the hard drive and restore your XP client from your most recent server backup.

  • I got the same error message as you, and after many searches for the error, founf out that there is a little bug which causes the network to not function properly in some cases.  I forget the exact issue (I believe it was something to do with dns and who is the browser master on the net), but the basic remedy FOR ME was to disconnect or power off the cable modem and all the other PCs temporarily from the network.  After doing this, reboot the Home Server, and the PC restored just fine.

Since I can't remember the specifics, if you google for +WHS +"<your error text here>" , you can retrace my steps in finding the fix for the issue.

    I hope this helps.

  • Or as already recommended, save the data, delete the volume, which contains the damaged sectors, create a new volume, copy the data back to it, reconfigure a backup and watch this disk specially carefull for new damaged blocks. If this happens, replace the drive as soon as possible.
I had good success with that method in the past, as long as the disk issues where strictly limited and not growing.
