Renaming nodes in HPC Pack 2012R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there a clean, supported method of renaming nodes in HPC Pack 2012R2?  We've had a few incidents during node deployment where Nodes A, B, and C (names from IT policy) are booted, but are recognized and auto-assigned names in HPC Pack in a different order.  Trying to change the names has been incredibly painful; I'd like to get the "official" answer from Microsoft on how to accomplish this task.

  • Hi,

You can try below, as I tried, it just worked:

    1. Take offline your compute nodes

    2. Select the Nodes, "Run Command" or "Remote Desktop to Them", and run powershell command "powershell rename-computer -newname <newComputerName>

    3. Reboot the nodes

    4. The node will be rebooted, and you will see from Cluster Manager GUI-->Resource management --> Operations --> Committed with operation such as "Discovering the configuration of node '<domainName>\<NewComputeName>$'

    5. Wait the Name changed to <NewComputeName> from the node list

    6. Bring online the node, so that the scheduler will get the new name
