MS Money File Corruption - help! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have looked through so many threads and can't find my issue here.

I have a MS 2007 Money file...when I go to login, it crashes (just started 2 days ago).  It says, 'Microsoft Money has stopped working' - and then 'a problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will cose the program and notify you if a solution is available'.  It was working fine 3 days ago - now this is all it does.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled.  Same error.

After reading through posts, I downloaded Sunset.  I set up a new account - and it works fine.  However, my old file (most important) when I go to log in -

The first step is it wants to convert my file so it can work (good).  I click 'next' and this is the error:

"Money can't locate 'file' or cannot open it, possibly because it is a read-only file or you do not have permission to change it or your disk drive is write protected."

It seems that Money must have crashed and the file is left 'open'...so the system can't open it as it thinks it is in use already.  Is there any way to fix this erorr?  Please help!! Thank you!

  • After installing Sunset, you should follow up with the patch described in the first post in this forum.

It would probably be good to copy your recent *.mbf files to other media if you have not already done so.

Same computer, no new drive or Windows install?  If so, continue.

    Close Money.

Copy your big *.mny, and your *.m17 files to your Documents folder. Try right-clicking the big (not the new littler one) *.mny file and choose Open. If that works, good.

If not, try the same thing with the *.m17 file. If still no joy, try the same thing with your latest bigger *.mbf file. If that doew nto work, try your second-newest big *.mbf file. Or you could go right to the newest *.mbf file.

  • This is an answer to the question in your last paragraph.

MS Money creates a file *.lrd when you open your data file to prevent you opening two files simultaneously.

Close down your PC and restart it (reboot) ~ this will guarantee that Money is not running.

When looking at the contents of your C:/ drive - follow the path: Tools/Folder Options/View/ and untick 'Hide extensions for known file types'

Now search for files with the extension lrd (the * stands in place of any file name), so search for    *.lrd

    Delete any files you find.

Now repeat a search for *.mny files and *.mbf files.

All Money backup (so *.mbf) files will be 'read only' ~ *.mny data files may be, but don't need to be 'read only'. Go to 'Properties' (right click on filename) and untick 'Read Only'.

If you can find any Money data or backup file that is not 'read only' try and open it.
