Your copy of Windows is based on an MSDN License Key - which is not for resale on its own without the whole MSDN package.

Please read the Blocked Keys Sticky on the forum index page for details - and the other stickies for instructions on what to do now.

  • If for whatever reason the Ebay seller is not willing to do anything to make this right and is blaming my computer having a spyware or virus infection for my issues and the auction ended in March what are my options?

Exactly as they were before - contact eBay, PayPal, and the legal authorities in both your own area and that of the vendor = please read the Stickies ad the head of the forum index page.

  • Noel thanks for the anwser but my main concern is getting my money back or having this ebay seller cover me for the cost of a key from microsoft.  I have contacted Ebay and since this happened past the 45 day mark of the auction there is nothing they or Paypal can do.

I am considering reporting it to Microsoft just to protect future buyers, but right now I am worried about how things are going to work out for me.  I dont have $200 to purchase a key from Microsoft right now.

  • Hello hlhbk,

Did you buy just a product key from the seller or did you purchase physical materials (rounded corner plastic case, wavy split Certificate of Authenticity on the top edge of the plastic case, product key inside printed on a yellow-orange Proof of License label, and genuine looking hologrammed installation disc) ?

  • It came in what appeared to be a legit retail box.  I looked at how to check the box and disks last night and they look real.  I guess they just created an identical sticker for the product key and put a MSDN key in there.

...no, there is nothing they WILL do - there's a subtle difference! If enough people complain, they will have to change their policy or lose business.
It may not help you, but it could help others in the future - and you never know, they may make an ex-gratia payment. DON'T stop after just one email exchange.
Don't just 'consider' reporting the vendor to MS - DO IT.
Please read the stickies at the head of the forum for more actions you can take.

  • Hello hlhbk,

Go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Windows button.  When your installation fails validation, you willl be presented with a lot of information about the issue and what Microsoft will do for you.

One option will be to purchase a Genuine Advantage Kit directly from Microsoft, which offers you a full retail license for W7U at about a 50% discount from regular retail.

Another option that they have for Windows XP, Vista, and Office, is a complimentary replacement program for those who inadvertently purchased high quality counterfeit materials, which apparently you ended up with.  However, as far as I know, Microsoft has not yet implemented this complimentary program for Windows 7 in the USA (they have it in the UK).  Please look closely at all of the web pages and links to see if you are given the option of the complimentary offer and post back to let us know whether that was an option presented to you.

One other point regarding getting a refund, if you paid PayPal by credit card you may have some consumer pretections from your credit card company.  IMHO it's certainly worth a phone call to check :-)
