Office 2007 Ultimate CD Key Not Valid - This is the error I get trying to re-install after a format even though I just bought it a couple months ago... Help Please RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

My issue is that I have just purchased Office Ultimate 2007 through the Ultimate Steal student promotion with Microsoft. I needed to restore my HP notebook but now that I am re-installing office (windows re-installation worked fine with key) when I go to try and activate it says "This CD key is not valid"

I would use Microsoft support like I have done before, but when I got to the stage where it checked my software to see if i had to pay it couldnt detect serial/cd key info because of this error, and as such the options it gave me would all cost me $40 despite the fact i am entitled to it.

I am using the same purchased cd key on the same machine... why is it doing this?? Someone please help!

Your HP laptop has two installations of Office---the Office Ultimate 2007 that you installed, and a Trial installation of Office Home and Student 2007.

Having a Trial installation of Office on a computer has a history of complicating future installations of other Office suites, and that seems to be the bug that his bitten your computer.

My advice would be to remove both programs, then install Office Ultimate 2007 by itself.  First try uninstalling each Office, one at a time, then restart after each one is uninstalled.  If you run into problems uninstalling via the Programs applet in Control Panel, here is a handy MS FixIt utility that will thoroughly nuke all Office installations at once:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179/

Post back to tell us how you did :-)

    Thanks very much!!! It worked.

The only snag I ran into was because of (I believe) my HP laptop. When I unistalled the copies of office and rebooted, my computer started up and I realized that it wasnt detecting my DVD drive, the problem was that the upper and lower limits of the registry key were affecvted, and HP automated support handled the issue fine.

Once that was fixed I re-installed office using my DVD and voila - solution worked.

    Thank you very much Dan!!
