restoring network connections - OneCare not waking up properly? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have three computers in my home network.  I leave them on, but configured them to go to sleep after 20 minutes of idle time.  When they wake up, they often will no longer be able to see each other on the network and I have to reboot them to get them to work.  This seemed to crop up as an issue after using Windowns Live OneCare.

The boxes are XP Home & XP Media Center Edition

How do I get them to stay connected or reconnect when they wake up?

    Thanks,
    Steve

  • They are wired and can access the Internet.  it is a "home or work."

The file and printer sharing is set right, as when I reboot, everything works fine.

I got another suggestion to make sure the network cards were not powered down when the boxes go to sleep.  I did not know you could set that.  I made the change and that seems to be working so far.

I'm not sure why I have had more problems with it lately, but it does seem to maintain connection with this change.

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • Wired or wireless? Can they access the Internet even if they can't see each other?

When they wake up and can't see each other, if you then immediately open OneCare and click change settings and go to the configure network button on the Firewall tab, are they showing the network as "home or work" or "public?"

On the advanced configuration for the Firewall, try checking File and printer sharing for Internet and subnet in addition to local subnet and see if that helps.
