WGA Failed on Restore RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently upgraded my Averatec Laptop running XP Home to 2GB Ram and ran it for about two weeks without any problems when the hard disk failed.  I did a format and then restored my system from a Disk Image 7 backup and on the first boot got the message that I was not running genuine Windows Software.  I cannot connect to the internet so cannot do upgrades etc.  The system runs for 10 or 20 minutes, then I start getting can't find *.dll messages and the system either freezes up or blue screens and restarts only to get the failed WGA message again.  I had run the laptop for over six months and updated and ran the WGA update successfully many times with out a problem before the hard disk quit.  The resore software was on the HDD so naturally there is no help there and Averatec won't supply any additional restore media.  When I tried to do a bios update using a memory stick I received the message that setup failed becasue I was not running genuine Windows Software.  Looks like Averatec and MS have me between a rock and a hard place.

    RK Bee,

Can you explain what is Disk Image 7?  Is this an hard disk imagining program? Today I contacted Averatec Customer Service @ 877/462-3462, press option 1 for English then option 4 for technical support.  Technical support was already closed. Again I called back and spoke with a customer service representative. Please visit http://www.shopaveratec.com/Next  there will be a location to place your model number. Also there is a direct link on the left hand column, Ordering Recover Media. You can aquire the media needed for $14 and some change. Hopefully this information will show your not between a rock and a hard place.

  • You can reinstall the same copy of Windows, on the same compuer, as many times as you wish.  If you are unable to then activate via the internet, then use the option to "activate by phone".  There is no WGA file you can save that will work after reformatting your hard drive.

  • Mr. Holm:

Yes; "Drive Image 7" is a hard disk imaging program formally produced by Power Quest; purchased by Symantec and the last I heard was now included as part of their Ghost 8 program.  I have used it very successfully in the past, before WGA, on several computers and except for the WGA problems it appears to have worked successfully again.  I don't understand why I am getting the WGA failed messages because the disk image was made right after I got the laptop and as stated previously it passed the WGA check several times before the HDD failure.  If it is because of the rather large memory increase, it ran well for over two weeks after the memory was installed.

I appreciate your trying to work out the problem with Averatec but my experience with them to date has been nothing but frustrating.  I have an Averatec 2100 series computer, Part No. 2150-EH1 and they do not offer a restore disk for it.  The last time I called about it I was told that they were considering putting out a restore disk because of so many requests and I was told I would be notified by Email if they did.  To date I have received no notification.  I checked again after receiving your reply and it is not listed on the pages you referenced.  I purchased this model primarily because of its size not wanting a huge mini-desktop to tote around as a portable.  I could have purchased several other models much cheaper but they would have been much larger and much heavier.  I guess Averatec is not interested in servicing it because in comparison to their other models it is quite inexpensive.  When I purchased it, it was advertised as capable of holding up to 2G of memory even though you could only purchase it with 512M.  After purchasing it and contacting Averatec I was told that it will support up to 2G but they did not install nor support the upgrade.  Since one of the reason for upgrading from my previous laptop was to increase the memory size I was very disappointed.  As noted, I did install the additional memory, which involves disassembling the unit and removing the keyboard and again as noted earlier it appeared to work.  When it is working it is a very nice computer and I was very pleased with it.

Sorry about getting off subject but I wanted to let you know about my efforts with Averatec and now why I am frustrated on the other end by doing a successful restore and getting the WGA failure.  Is there anything I can do to overcome the WGA problem?

    Sincerely,

    RKBee

  • RKBee,

As far as I know, there is nothing in WGA that would prevent you from connecting to the internet.

Are you confusing WGA with Product Activation?  Are you being told that Windows needs to be activated?

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

(If this particular computer cannot connect to the internet to run the mgadiag utility, please download it using another computer, transfer the file, and then run it.  Paste the resultant report into a text file, transfer it back to the connected computer, and then post.)

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of  Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?  We would expect yours to read "Averatec".

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

  • RKBee,

Thank you for the feedback. Today I called the Out of Warranty Repair @ 800/733-9155. Looks like the only option available from Averatec is sending in the laptop for re-imaging through their repair facility. There is a charge for their labor. In turn you would have the option available to make a recovery media cd.

Please run the diagnostic test Dan mentioned. In turn we will need you to re-post here in the forum. Do you have another computer from which you may re-post?  RKBee another option would be is to purchase the WGA Kit online. The cost of the kit is $149.00. Drivers can be downloaded from Averatec should there be any conflicts. Please post back and lets go from here.

  • I had some (more) problems with my PC: bad RAM, changed my HDD and some stupid virusses or something like that with thanks to my stupid kids.

So I did formated the HDD and reinstaled XP for 3 times in 1 week.

For the good order, I have the original XP Home and also original MS CD with SP2.

When I try to activate XP it was not possible regarding to the screen product was too many times activated.

I called the number on the screen (robot...) and fill in the numbers. Then I get again the robot telling me (thank you) that my XP is already instaled on 1 machine (PC)

This is stupid, of course it was instaled = ON MY own PC.

I read somewhere on internet dat before formating a HD you should save WGALogon, WgaTray and WgaNotify.

I did this before the last format. I put this back but no help.

The question is: if I format my PC a few times, I changed some bad RAM and the HDD, is XP not working anymore?
