How can I load a VCP port?

    Question

  • I'm trying to install a FTDI Virtual COM port to use my bitcoin miner.

When I connect my Butterflylabs miner to the computer is recognized as an unknown usb device.

I manually load the drivers of FTDI and then there should appear a new COM port.

The new COM port doesn't appear so I install the COM port myself true add legacy hardware and load the usb serial port driver from FTDI.
To make the link between the usb device and COM port I should check the checkbox "load vcp" under the settings of my usb device.
The problem is that this option is available under the advanced tab but since that there is no advanced tab available I can't load the vcp, ports are not connected with one another and I can't use the device.

What can I do to load the VCP?

  • I think you'll have to ask FTDI.

You can ask general windows hardware questions over here.

  • I allready contacted FTDI and the gave me a solution to load a VCP but that is all they could do since I use a 3th party device.

The awnser given by FTDI support is:
in order to load the VCP go to the Device Manager and locate the ‘USB Serial Converter’ under the ‘Universal Serial Bus controllers’. Open it and click on the Advanced tab, ensure that that the ‘Load VCP’ option is set and close the window. Unplug and re-insert your device and you should notice a COM port appear under ‘Ports (COM & LPT)’.

The problem is that there is no "advanced" tab in the properties of the USB Serial Converter.

  • I have been to the http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm site but that doesn't help much. I have done everything as mentioned in the installation guide. Accourding to the guide there should appear a COM port, if  as mentioned by Dave earlier.not then I much check load com port what is available under the advvanced tab in the properties of the usb serial converter.
The advanced tab isn't there so I can't check the box.
All I need is the advanced tab.
I have posted a new question at
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/hardware? as mentioned by Dave earlier.
