Cleanup Task for Client Backups failing WSSBackup.exe 0xc0000005 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Ok, so here's the problem. I have an error in my Dashboard that "A scheduled cleanup task for Client Computer Backup did not succeed." ..... says it has been 21 days since it has. I've been trying to troubleshoot since the error first appeared and have got no where. Here's what I've done...

Tried to run the "Cleanup" task manually. Task reports as successful after only a few seconds, but the alert in the dashboard updates to the time I started the task.

Check the Event Viewer for errors. Every time the Cleanup task runs, there is an Application Error listed in the event viewer for "WSSBackup.exe", with exception code 0xc0000005. Full details at the end of this post.

I've tried running SFC and it said it found a corrupted file and successfully repaired it. I rebooted and ran again, no integrity violations. Still this error.

I've done lots of searching online and find lots of problems with people having WSSBackup crashing during backup with error 0xc0000025, but I can't find anything on 0xc0000005. Also, my backups are running normally, just the cleanup won't run.

I'm not sure if it is related, but about a month ago, the server alerted me that my backup database was corrupted and needed to be repaired. Not sure why this happened, but I ran the repair and it was "successful", although it lost all my backups that weren't archived (I don't personally call that successful). All dates prior to the repair just show incomplete now.

Any help is appreciated. I want to avoid deleting my backup database if at all possible. I have archived backups from computers I no longer have going back 5 years I don't want to lose if I don't have to. Am I missing something? What is this 0xc0000005 error? Thanks!

  • Hi,

According to your description, my understanding is that there is error - "A scheduled cleanup task for Client Computer Backup did not succeed." in Dashboard on WHS 2011, and has WSSBackup crashing during backup with error 0xc0000025.

    >Tried to run the "Cleanup" task manually. Task reports as successful after only a few seconds, but the alert in the dashboard updates to the time I started the task.
By default, the client computer backup cleanup task is scheduled to run every Saturday after all backups are complete. Make sure there are enough time(at lease 3 hours) for computer backup retention policy. The, try to manually run the client backup cleanup task:
Start - Administrative Tools - Task Scheduler - Task Scheduler Library – Microsoft - Windows Server - Cleanup task - click Run in the Action pane - The Status changes to Running until the task is complete.

    >there is an Application Error listed in the event viewer for "WSSBackup.exe", with exception code 0xc0000005.
Check the Client Computer Backups folder on the server and make sure the folder does not have NTFS "compression" enabled.

Or, restart the server in clean boot, and then, confirm the result.

    Best Regards,
    Eve Wang

  • Ok, I just want to clarify - my backups are not failing, and I am not receiving error 0xc0000025. My backups are running normally and on schedule.

The problem lies with the backup cleanup.

I have already tried running the Cleanup scheduled task manually as you suggested. Whether it is run manually or automatically on it's schedule, WSSBackup.exe fails immediately after the task starts with error 0xc0000005. I do not have NTFS compression enabled, and I have plenty of free space. Restarts and clean boots make no difference.

  • New development, I also notice that this error appears in the log every time WSSBackup.exe crashes:

The Windows Server Client Computer Backup Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
