Trying to reinstall XP on my laptop RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just replaced my harddrive in my sony vaio. I couldn't find my reinstallation disks, so I attempted to reinstall XP using my microsoft XP home CD that I used for my desktop. I get to the product key input screen and I type in the code on the bottom of my laptop, but it keeps saying the CD key I entered is not valid. Whats the deal?

  • It says Windows XP Home Edition.  I am using the Windows XP Home cd if you are wondering.  Any ideas?

  • The OEM Product Key affixed to your Sony laptop is only valid with an OEM Windows XP CD.  It will not work with a "Retail Version" of Windows XP.  Contact Sony support and request a Recovery CD designed for your specific Sony laptop model.
