Windows genuine advantage message on old Windows XP computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, just wanted to know why, with a computer born in 2004 that has run Windows XP its entire life and has been regularly updated, including sp3, I get a message just today that Windows has been significantly changed and needs to be validated, like it's fake or something. I know this computer came with a genuine Windows disc, but who knows where that is right now?  When I go to download the validation tool, I can't connect to the internet and the process fails, but when I finally call in the numbers that the tool takes off the machine, I get a response that my software is valid and a whole new set of numbers to type in.  Plus, when I try to roll my computer back to an earlier date, the farthest back I can go is January 3. What's going on with Microsoft, anyway, where after 8 years Windows Genuine Advantage thinks I'm using illegitimate software? And what has happened to System Restore?

  • Windows will sometimes ask to be reactivated when hardware is added, replaced or removed. It cam also occur if a hardware driver is installed that changes the Hardware ID of the hardware it controls. this is a normal thing and should only take a minute or so to complete.

If you have already reactivated, go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate once validation is complete, the issue should be resolved.

  • To help us analyze and troubleshoot a non-genuine notification issue you may be experiencing, please download and run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool

Once you run the tool, click on the Continue button, then click on the Copy button and paste the report into your post, along with your question.

    Thank you!

  • Here's what I get.  Why would I get validation messages after so many years? Why would I suddenly have to call in to activate software I've had for ages?  I'd like to prevent this in the future, if possible.
