Disk Management Addin 1.0.9.8 - Storage Pool drive assignment RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am having a heck of a time trying to get the WHS system disk connected to the SATA 1 port on the MB and get the BIOS to boot from that drive.  The BIOS only shows the drive model and not the serial number.  Anyway, that will get resolved by trial and error.  The real question is how does WHS or the Disk Management Addin determine what Disk Number to assign.  It appears that after removing and adding a couple of storage pool drives the assignment is random?!  The WHS system disk moved from Disk 0 to Disk 2 as an example.

  • Hi Ken,

Disk Management grabs the physical disk number from Windows, and Windows assigns numbers based on the order in which it detects disks. That order is BIOS (or disk controller) dependent, and some disk controllers will renumber their disks as you plug disks into different ports.

So it's not random, but it's also not something we have any control over :)
