Windows Vista Home Premium activation failure RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am unable to activate my Windows Vista Home Premium installation. That's strange considering that I had already successfully activated it after installation!

When I try to activate online, I get the following message:

    ---

A problem occurred when Windows tried to activate. Error Code 0xE0000204.

For a possible resolution, click More Information.

You can also contact Microsoft by phone to help resolve this problem.

    ---

Clicking on 'More Information' displays the Error Details dialog with the following information:

    ---

    ---------------------------

    ---------------------------
The following information was found for this error:

    Code:

    Description:

I then downloaded the MGADiag.exe tool and ran a diagnostic with the following result:

As you can see, I have genuine Windows but the activation script seems to be failing for whatever reason "slmgr.vbs".

I also thought of giving Phone Activation a try, but my installation ID is completely blank! Can someone from Microsoft shed light on this?

    Thanks,

    Dileepa

  • Hi Darin,

I tried that a number of times without success. I even ran the online WGA validation tool and was informed that it couldn't tell me if my copy of Windows was Genuine or not!!!

I then remembered that I had uninstalled a driver for PixelView PlayTV Pro (BT878) via the driver supplied uninstallation utility on the 17th of this month. I checked System Restore to see if there was a restore point for 16th and luckily there was! I restored the computer to 16th and rebooted, and Windows reverted back to 'This copy is Genuine' and 'Windows is activated' state!

I would have never imagined that using a driver supplied uninstallation utility would cause me so much trouble. As you can see, your Genuine program only causes trouble for 'genuine users', while people who use non-genuine copies continue to do so!

I am just happy that System Restore worked and that I did not have to go through the pain of installing Windows and updating it all over again!

  • Hello pdileepa,

To fix the "Blank installation ID" problem, you need to "change" the product key. This will force Vista to re-generate the Instalation ID.

To do that, Click the Start button,
    Right-click 'Computer' and select 'Properties'
Scroll to the bottom-right of the window and click the "Change Product Key"

Enter either the product key from the retail box or from the sticker on the side or bottom of your computer.

Once you are done, try Activating by Phone again and the Installation ID should now be visable.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS
