400 Error when I try and sync a folder on my mac RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey all,

I've been using live mesh for a few months now on my systems at work and home to sync personal files (using both Vista and XP). I haven't had any trouble with Live Mesh on those systems yet.

Anyway, I tried to hook my mac up to my mesh, and I have Live mesh loaded and connected. I have a couple of folders synchronised. One of the things I was trying to sync was my Firefox adblockplus plug-in settings - a folder called adblockplus. When I try and sync this folder (to ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/blahblah.default/adblockplus), I get a 400 error, saying I should choose a different folder. I've tried deleting the existing folder, but I get the same error. I have full permissions in this directory, so I doubt it is a permissions issue.

Anyone know a work-around/the cause of this?

    Cheers

  • Sorry about the problems you are having using the Mac Live Mesh Client.

The Mac Live Mesh Client does not allow any folders in the ~/Library tree to be synced.  This is because there are folders in that tree specifically the LaunchAgents folder that would cause code to "just launch" on your Mac.  The ~/Library tree also holds the preferences for your applications.  We felt that this was a security risk for your machine should you share out a folder in this tree.

You could copy the items you wish to sync into a folder that is not rooted in the ~/Library tree and then copy those files into the folder you wish in the ~/Library tree.  While I understand that is not the behavior you are looking for it should allow you to sync those file.

Thanks for trying the Mac Live Mesh Client and providing feed back.

  •  I am having the same issue but the file is located online on mesh.com and it won't let me add it to my Mac.

    Error
    Choose a different location.
The Live Mesh Agent returned an error: 401

It worked on day one of the Mac client release because I added several folders in the same way.

Any help would be appreciated. I am trying to add the folders to my Mac Desktop.

    Hi,

Our developers have asked for a little clarification about your scenario.  Could you let me know if the situation is: (1) You have created a folder on your Live Desktop that will not sync to your Mac desktop, OR (2) You've created a folder on your Mac and it will not sync up to your Live Desktop, OR (3) You created a Live Mesh folder on your PC and it shows up on your Live Desktop but not on your Mac desktop.  Or, (4) None of the above, I suppose - in which case, perhaps you describe what you're trying to do in more detail?

Once we're clearer about what situation you're in, we'll be able to determine what's going wrong.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • I created the folder on my Vista PC. The folder synced up with my Live Desktop. I can not add the folder to my Mac desktop.

I just tried to add the folder to my Mac and it worked without the error. The only thing I did differently was shut down the Mesh application and then restart the application.

    Hi,

Thank you for clarifying.  I'm glad it has started to work for you.

  • Hi Jim,

Would it be possible for this to be changed? I'd also like Live Mesh to sync files to CrossOver on my mac, and that stores its preferences there too. Live Mesh is really useful for syncing preferences between PCs, and cross platform applications would benefit from support for this too. I personally would use it to sync Steam application preferences, firefox preferences.

A workaround for users who are more used to UNIX would be to sync to a folder in documents and then replace the folder you want to sync with a softlink to this folder.

Would it not be better to just block the LaunchAgents folder or have an "unsafe mode" option for advanced users?

    Cheers

  • Hi Teggun,

Thanks for using Live Mesh Mac client and for taking the time to give feedback.  I will share this idea with the rest of the Mac Live Mesh development team.

    Thanks!

  • That's disappointing.  I hope that will be reconsidered.  I would love to use Live Mesh to sync my Macmail folders which are stored in ~/Library/Mail.

    Thanks.

  • I would have to agree with SFalatko, at least the option of sharing ~Library folder should be of the user... I also wanted to have mail folders locally stored in two different computers as well as my Journler folder, unfortunately it seems Live Mesh is not an option...

  • Likewise... I hope this will be reconsidered... it would be better IMHO to block any folder that would cause a problem, OR allow other folders... for example:  Application Support --- which contains files created by individual applications.  I want to sync several of these which track, for example, the RSS list for a news-reading application, which feeds have already been read, etc.     I have it working with symlinks and Dropbox... but that's not a very elegant solution...   MESH would be better and more straightforward.

    thanks.
