Vail - power saving options RRS feed

  • Question

  • If and when will Vail support power saving modes/sleeping if nobody is accessing it.  I myself do not need a server running all night long if backups are not running.  Complete waste of electricity and these days quite alot of money!!.

I backup everything on a wednesday night and thats it.  The only other time i would access the server is downloads or when im on a nightshift i would RA into the server to perform work on my other PC's sort my music - etc....

Most of the time is not been used.  It sits in the loft so hard to get to physically switch it off.  Is some kind of lights out feature be added?...or no network traffic - sleep mode.

  • Out of the box, Vail won't have any power saving turned on. While there are a variety of possibilities built into the base operating system, Microsoft feels (correctly, I think) that the average OEM server is going to be a low power device to be begin with, and they've chosen to allow OEMs, system builders, ISVs, and end users to build a variety of solutions as they see fit.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • I set my Vail server to sleep after 45 min of non-activity (in power panel). On the client PC, I set a scheduled task to send a WOL (Wake on LAN) to the server. This task is triggered by these conditions: 1) On Workstation Unlock, 2) At Startup, 3) At Log On of any users 4) Daily (send a WOL every 5 minutes indefinely). On the "Conditions" tab, unselect "Wake the computer to run this task"

This setup send a WOL every 5 mins when the client PC is ON. The server is available in about 20 s after the client PC is ON. After 45 mins of non activity, the server go to sleep. This setup work fine for backup because I am using Windows Prof 7 64b backup software on my PC. If you want to use the Windows Server backup program, you have to set a wakeup task that is in the time window that the backup software on the server is scheduled to run.

I have beed running this way for many months. So far, no problems found. I am using the Windows Pro backup because I can decide when to do the backup. In the schedule task for the backup, I do the following: 1) Send a WOL to server, 2) wait 30 s. 3) Start the backup program
