Need to know if Genuine BEFORE I buy, not after RRS feed

  • Hello Dearoledad,

Since you specifically wrote "product key" which would mean they are not selling a full packaged product (retail package, hologrammed discs inside, etc etc), then that's an easy one to answer.

As of this writing, there are ONLY two places for general retail consumers to purchase a standalone Genuine retail product key for Office products:  The Microsoft Store (http://store.microsoft.com) and Dell Online (www.dell.com).

[Note that there are other places to purchase standalone Genuine product keys for Office products, but these are for limited audiences such as students, where there is a status check prior to purchase such as faxing in an student ID or the use of a student email address.  These would not be considered as general retail consumers.]

So to answer your question, since the site you posted is not Microsoft and not Dell, then we know FOR SURE that they are not authorized by Microsoft to sell standalone product keys to general consumers.  Therefore, it's very likely that you will end up with a nongenuine installation of Office.

  • Hello Dearoledad,

    You're welcome! :-)

Also note that Microsoft's Complimentary Replacement program will stand behind you if you inadvertently purchase a high-quality counterfeit of a full-retail-packaged product of Office, but there is no such program offered for those who buy only a product key from an unauthorized site.

  • Thank you.  Your reply is very helpful and based on whatyou said, I went back to the web site in question and rechecked - it says it will download the software so it is not a product key afterall.

  • I needed it for a new HP notebook. I went back to the HP web site and bought a copy there using some accumulated gift cards.  So, I got a good deal from a reputable vendor.  Thanks again for your advise.
