Windows vista not legit?! Can anyone help? RRS feed

  • Question

  • here is my diagnostic report. it's very disheartening that since I've only had my computer for a little over a year that this is happening. However it appears that others are having issues as well. I have tried the "net start slsvc" with no avail.  I hope someone can help me! I love my computer and would hate for something to happen. I have also tried to do everything recommended that appeard as well. No matter what I do my updates won't update and I'm rather afraid that I'll get infected. any help is appreciated.

  • Hello oldsoulnewbody,

The problem is that your Vista's Software Licensing Service has stopped. Vista uses this service to check itself and confirm it is Genuine. When the service is stopped, Vista is unable to confirm it's own Genuine status and may show Genuine or Non-Genuine. The fact that the Service has stopped is also, most likely, the cause of other issues you may be experiencing (such as not having access to the Control Panel).

Normally this is not a big problem, since you can just restart the Service. However, we have seen a number of users that receive an error when they attempt to restart the Service. This indicates a more serious 'root cause' to the service having stopped.

What I would like you to do is to try to restart the service using the 'Service Restart' steps, below. If the service won't restart, you will receive an error. match the error the the below A), B) or C)

You did say you already tried to restart the service, but didn't tell us the error code. Follo the below steps again, recored the arror and match it to the A), B) or C)

    Service Restart steps:

(If you have access to the Start button):

    1)    Click the Start button

    2)    Type: cmd in the Start Search field

    3)    At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4)    Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5)    Type: net start slsvc

(If you do not have access to the Start button):

    1)    Click the option that launches an Internet Browser

    2)    A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3)    Find the file cmd.exe

    4)    Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5)    Type: net start slsvc

    A)   If the error message is "System Error 3, The system cannot find the path specified." or "System Error 2, The system cannot find the file specified": Go to the main Vista Validation forum page http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/threads/, look in the announcement section and follow the steps found in thread "Fix for ‘Software Licensing service Has Stopped’ on some Vista 64bit systems"

    B)   If you receive any other error (System Error 5, System Error 57346 or System Error 54273): These occur as a result of massive file corruption.  We do not know what the root cause of the corruption is, but the likely causes are either Malware Infection or failing Hard Drive. The only resolution we can suggest is reinstall Vista.

    C)   If you receive no System Error and the Service start but then stops almost immediately: Something is apparently activity stopping the service. Most likely caused by some other dependent Windows Service or possibly a Malware infection. While the Software Licensing Service, itself, is part of the Anti-piracy sub-system, the running (and stopping) of Windows Services is a Vista core system that I have no insight to and is supported by Vista support at http://support.microsoft.com

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Hello oldsoulnewbody,

No, it should be saved as a text file.

Try just saving it as normal 'slsvc_reg.txt'  then right click and select Properties.

On the top of the first tab, there should be a field that says slsvc_reg.txt change it to slsvc_reg.reg and click OK.
You may be asked if you are sure you want to make the change. Click yes.

If you are still unable to follow the steps, I can only suggest to contact Vista Support at http://support.microsoft.com and explain that the "ImagePath" portion of Registry Key "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\slsvc]" was deleted (most Likely by an over zealous registry cleaner program) and ask them to help you fix it.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Try the following procedure:

    1) Open Internet Browser

    2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Reboot Twice

    12) You may be required to Re-Activate. Use the Activate by Phone method as outlined here:

You can reset your Windows Vista activation by performing the following:

    1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  slui.exe 4

    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

    3. Select your Country.

    4. Follow the instructions for phone activation.

    5.  Once completed, restart your computer.

    6. Afterward, visit
Genuine Microsoft Software and click on Validate Windows, then restart your computer.

  • It appears that your Vista's Licensing Store may be corrupted.  Below are two sets of steps. The first set will attempt to restet the Store and if that doesn't work, the next will recreate the Store.

    1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the address field
    3) Find the file cmd.exe
    4) Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms
    6) Hit the Enter key
    7) Reboot twice

    1) Return to the cmd windows
    2) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    3) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    4) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    5) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    6) Type: net start slsvc
    7) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    8) Reboot Twice
    9) You may be required to enter Product Key from the COA sticker (located on the side of bottom of the computer) and the Activate (use the Activate by Phone method)

  • Are you right-clicking on the Command Prompt and selecting Run as administrator before entering  net stop slsvc ?
It is important to do so.

  • Hello oldsoulnewbody,

It didn't work? could you be more specific?

Did you get an error when you tried the 'net start slsvc' command? if so, which one?
Did you not get an error? If so, then that would be c) above.

According to your Diagnostic Report, your issue is that the "Software Licensing Service has Stopped" From my experience, this is not a guess.

The steps I provided above is the resolution steps for the "Software Licensing Service has Stopped" issue.  So if those steps did not resolve the issue, I would very much like to know how/why (in order to continue helping you with your current issue as well as to help future customers with this issue).

  • everytime i have tried to do the net start i receive "system message 3". I tried it to not run it as an admin to see what would happen and it said System error 5, access denied.

Upon trying your steps i got all the way down to to saving the the slsvc_reg.reg on my desktop and it said it cannot be opened due to it not being a binary file (i sought out your thread). Is there a possibility that perhaps the "save as" file name is incorrect?
    thank you for your help.
