If the "Change Product Key" button is not working or isn't available, there are two other ways you can change the product key:

    A)   The Slui.exe 3 command

      1) Click the Start Button and type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key.

This will start up the Change Product Key wizard

      2) Follow the wizard

    B) Manual Poduct Key Change

      1) Click the Start Button and type: CMD

      2) Right-click on the CMD file and select "Run as Administrator"  <-important

This will open the Administrator Command Prompt

      3) In the Command Prompt, type: slmgr.vbs -ipk <type product key here>

      4a) next type: slmgr.vbs -ato

This should automatically activate the new key, but if that doesn't work, go to step #4b)

      4b) Type: slui.exe 4

The slui.exe 4 command will start up the Activate by Phone wizard

    Thank you

If your computer shows that message, then there is something wrong - and changing the key may well not work anyhow.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

The Key in use here is one from an MSDN account - if you are not the holder of the account, then you were sold a counterfeit.
If the Key here does not agree with the new Key you are trying to input, then the other errors are what are causing your problems.
The  0x80070005 error is 'Access Denied', and can be a tricky one to fix - look here for some help.

once you've done that, reboot at least twice, then run the MGADiag report again, and post the new report in  your response.

  • I've ordered a genuine advantage kit with a valid product key so that I can correct a validation error with my computer. I now have a valid product key BUT none of the suggestions listed above are working on my computer. The kit should arrive soon. Will I need to wait until the kit arrives to correct the problem?

  • I had my son, who lives in Ohio with his mother, install Windows 7 using discs I had purchased for him.  He called a few days later and asked about activation and said he was having problems.  There was NOWHERE in the My Computer properties where he could activate windows, and when he did a search for the activation wizard, he got an error saying that the file path wasnt valid, or that he didnt have permission to access the file.  I spent quite some time remotely troubleshooting this issue, when I finally came upon THIS post and instructions.  Worked THE FIRST TIME, and without issue.  Thank you so much for the response, and the help.  My son now has a fully functional, activated Windows 7 Ultimate OS....Thanks again!

You didn't read the reply just above.  Do NOT piggyback on other poster's threads.

Colin – he was just saying ‘Thank you’ to Darin for the solution to his problem, not asking for help
