Windows 7 Task manager stopped Working Error

  Task Manager  created a error dialogue that said-Task manager stopped Working Error. This seems to occur after I downloaded and installed a number of windows updates since 7/30/10. I can't attribute the error to the updates positively because around that time I installed a western digital back up software application on my desktop. The wd software did have a tracking file which I did delete via my virus scan software. Nonetheless the error persists. I have run a complete virus scan, scanned for trojans, spyware, etc, even ran "scannow" and received no findings. I booted the systyem in safe mode and still got the error when accessing task manager. Any more suggestions, please.
