I would like to run a PC Restore from my second, internal D drive, where backups have been made in the past from my C drive. I was experiencing startup problems,
(memory dumps). I tried safe start (which started fine) to investigate the problem, first trying system restore, which did not fix the startup memory dumps. I then
tried the original Windows Vista Business (32 b) disk for system repair, but instead the routine reinstalled Windows Vista Business. Now my computer does not recognize
any of my programs, not Windows Live OneCare--at least these neither show up on the desktop, nor when "programs" is accessed through the start center.
I subscribed to OneCare online, through windows, when I purchased my computer. Thus, I do not have any disks or other means to access complete PC Restore from
my D drive, where backups were stored.

Hello, Virgil. it sounds like you installed a new operating system to your C:\ drive which means that you will need to install your programs once again. If you were using OneCare, you can install OneCare from http://onecare.live.com - the trial - and then activate the installed trial by signing in with your subscription LiveID when clicking Subscribe in OneCare.
Once you ahve installed OneCare, you can configure backup the way you had done so before. If you D:\ drive is an external disk, then it is a simple matter of running the restore wizard and selecting to restore from another computer. The old backup set is from "another computer" since you have reinstalled Windows. If your D:\ drive is an internal drive, that means that you originall configured backup in OneCare to use Centralized backup and you defined the location of your backup as a network Share to \\computer\folder. You will need to configure backup first, point to the same location, run a small backup, and then use the option to perform a custom restore from another PC to use the old backup as the restore source. If that fails to work for you, recovery is still possible by using Winzip or other 3rd party compression program to extract the backed up data manually from the .zip files within the backup location and rejoin any files that were split into fragments before backing them up. This utility will allow the rejoin -http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/
I'll note also, that OneCare only backs up data, not programs or Windows. The data that is backed up is defined in your backup plan.

Stephen, thanks for your help. After spending a couple hours grappling with accessing previous backup files, two questions:
1. What is the exact path nomenclature to designate an internal D: drive, so that it will be recognized as a home for future backups/restores. I don't understand \\computer\folder;
2. My external M: drive is full with existing backups (4 Gb remaining), so that I can't do a small initial backup and subsequently access the existing backup files to restore. Is recovery using Winzip the only remaining option for restoring existing files in that location?

Technically, backing up to an internal drive is an unsupported scenario. See the post at the top of the forum for how to configure this if you wish to proceed.
Once you restore the data from your external drive, you can delete the old backups to free up space before setting up and performing a new full backup to the drive. I recommend using the external drive rather than the internal drive.
There is a post near the top of the forum that details how to delete the old backups.
