Live.com Search does not distinguish language variants RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello.  I have registered country-code top-level domains (CC-TLDs) for the country/language-specific versions of my site.  Each one specifies that pages are for the country/language that goes with the CC-TLD.

    • MySite.com uses <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en-us" lang="en-us"> (This TLD is not actually U.S.-specific; but, it is primarily used by U.S. companies, and U.S. residents do not use the .us CC-TLD much.)
    • MySite.co.uk uses <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en-gb" lang="en-gb">

    • MySite.ca uses <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en-ca" lang="en-ca">

    • MySite.com.au uses <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en-au" lang="en-au">

The Live Search results for my site, when checking the "Only from [country]" checkbox shows results that only include my site for that country.  That is what I expect and want.

However, Live.com (http://www.live.com/?mkt=en-us) search results show results from all my sites, which looks confusing to searchers.  I want and expect only MySite.com results to show; because its lang attributes are set to en-us, as specified in the mkt querystring parameter.

    Can anyone help with this?

    Cordially,

    Lee C.

  • Brett,

I tried to reply when I initially got your post, but got errors on the forum Web site.  Anyway, I'm trying again.

This problem with my CC TLDs has not been an issue for some time because Live has dropped all of the crawl data for all of my sites except the .com site.  Surely not the "solution" I want.  "Oh, our data is wrong?  We've removed it. Problem solved."

The last time the MSN Bot hit my .ca site was Aug 14, 2008.  The results were available briefly, then disappeared (from the Webmaster Center and Live.com)

The last time the MSN Bot hit my .co.uk site was Sept 2, 2008.  Again, the results were available briefly, then disappeared.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  • The issue that superceded the original issue, which I initially reported on October 3, 2008, still exists!  That is over 6 months ago!
