Live Mesh currently deleting files apparently at random RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hi there,

I've already lodged a bug report for this on Connect (FeedbackID=463234) , but was wondering whether anyone else has been having the same experience, and whether there's a known workaround.

    Cheers,

  • Thanks for posting the feedback id. Data loss is taken very seriously and I'm sure your bug submision will have a high priority. It might be helpful to also include Live Mesh logs from your home computer to your bug report considering Live mesh has crashed on that computer. I don't know of a workaround but until a solution to the random deletion issue is found I would stop all folder synchronization.

  • Hi Jim,

Thanks for your quick reply and practical suggestions. I did attach the logs, and have updated the bug report a couple of times, though I haven't had any response since submitting it on the 2nd. I'm taking backups of the folder in question to guard against data loss, so will continue to try synchronisation for the moment.

    Cheers,

  • Yes, I have had the same thing happen. Initially when I installed Live Mesh I discovered a group of folders that I had not deleted in the desktop Recycle Bin. The next day I found another deleted file. I thought that this might be a problem with the initial synchronization, so I filed a bug report and kept a close watch on the Mesh Notes and my Recycle Bin. A week later I found that the same thing had happened again, and the deleted files were in folders that I had definitely not accessed and certainly didn't delete.
My initial bug report has still not been addressed and I decided that the risk of losing data was unacceptable. I don't mind experimenting with beta software, and my data is carefully and redundantly backed up, but I am afraid that I could lose something important and not recognize the loss until much later. So I removed Live Mesh from all of my computers. I subscribed  to a commercial desktop sync system (SugarSync), and have been very happy with the clear documentation, transparent operation, speed, and reliability of the service. It's sweet! I know that Live Mesh is beta, but I honestly don't think that it is even at that level as it now stands. Certainly the documentation isn't. I will follow it with interest, but I won't trust it with my data. If you use it, monitor your files, the Live Mesh Notes, and your Recycle Bin!

  • Thanks for trying Live Mesh and for filling the bug report. If the problem is with Live Mesh and not specific to your setup the bug reports will help the devs correct the issue. It is is something about your setup, that would still point to Live Mesh needing to be aware of that setup so as not to delete files.

  • I've had the same problem. I've collected the Live mesh logs and validated your bug but am unsure how to upload the logs when I'm validating an earlier bug report. Could someone help with that?

    Thanks

  • I don't think there is a way to attach your logs to someone else's bug report but you can submit your own bug report. It's ok that it will be a duplicate. The important thing is to get the logs submitted.

    That is very rare.

The most common reason for this is that the Mesh folder on one or more PCs is also being synchronized with other sync software.
You will typically find "deleted" files shown as a conflict in the notifier or they will be in the local Recycle Bin as Live Mesh deleted the file to mirror what it was instructed to do by the other devices in the Mesh.

  • Hi Stephen,

Just to let you know I've been continuously using Live Mesh since then and haven't yet had a recurrence of the issue, or had any other significant issues with the service. I haven't installed any other file synchronisation software on any of the machines on which I use it, so I guess it must be some type of initial synchronisation issue. It would be nice to know if there were a way to avoid it altogether though, so please let us know if there are any other things that can be done (apart from not running other synch software) to at least reduce its likelihood.

  • Hi ameshuser.
I'm glad to read that the issue has not happened again. I wish that I could tell you what caused it, but I've never expereinced a data loss with Live Mesh. I have had Live Mesh get files in conflict due to me changing a file in more than one location when Live Mesh wasn't synchronizing one or more locations when I was changing the file(s). But never complete deletion of a file randomly.

  • We have a customer with this exact problem, where files are being sent directly to the recycle bin without any settings being changed.  When the Admin looked at the folders in Recycle, they were all empty, but when she dragged them back it [of course] duped instead of replacing, and those had files inside.  So far, we've only spent about 5 minutes looking at it.  We will know more tomorrow after digging more deeply.  It sounds like we want to take a close look at the sync settings, and maybe even redo them from scratch.  Now I just need to find out where the log files go...

I'll let you know how it pans out...

I don't recall where the logs are located, but you can use the process here to gather them to a single .cab file which can then be opened with WinZip or other 3rd party compression utility to view the individual logs. http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/d52b350a-f3e0-41c6-8e78-d6378e566b9e
