I've been running the same theme the past few days with no problems at all that I can see - perhaps uninstalling the theme, re-downloading it, and reinstalling it would help?

Have you been having problems with malware - you appear to have some services not functioning properly.
Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/
Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.
Also...
Please open an Elevated (Administrator) Command Prompt window and use the following
commands... .net start sppsvc
sc qc sppsvc
net start sppuinotify
sc qc sppuinotify
Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

All of that looks the way it should - so why did the Farbar scanner show the PlugPlay service as not running?
Possibly there was a software conflict which prevented it running in that instance? Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM PRO' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.
Delete everything it finds

It is odd because I've not gotten the error the last couple times I've powered up. I'll run the malwarebytes and let you know what it finds.
Thanks,
Joe

Joe -
you seem to have deleted the reply I got notified about?
Here's my analysis anyhow, based on what I got :)
You had a number of undesirable programs installed - including...
MySearchDial
Advanced System Protector
RegClean Pro
BrowseSmart
MindSpark
ALL are easily avoidable and ALL are unnecessary, and ALL are harmful to your PC's health, as well as your browsing safety.
I would recommend repeating the scan again in a couple of days, after updating the MBAM definitions again, just in case anything slipped through the net.
Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth No - I do not work for Microsoft, or any of its contractors. Sunday, December 8, 2013 8:32 PMModerator -
Yes. A couple of these (at least) were downloaded when I downloaded the unzipper for the farber scanner. I think they've been uninstalled now. I'll repeat the scan midweek to make sure everything is still OK.
Thanks for your help,
Joe

Hi Noel,
This morning I had the error message again. I ran the malwarebytes diagnostic scan and there were no problems detected. So I went back to your earlier instructions. When I ran the Farber scanner, it showed again that Plug & Play wasn't running. I used your script to start it up, restarted the computer and the error is gone.
Are you still thinking that this Plug & Play issue is the source of the problem and do you have any ideas on how to get Plug & Play to work normally?
Thanks,
Joe
Monday, December 9, 2013 5:50 PM -
There's obviously something blocking it - it may be throwing errors up that are visible in the Event Viewer...
Please open Event Viewer
In the left pane, navigate to the Windows Logs
right-click on Applications and select 'Save all events as...' save as Apps.evtx
repeat for the System logs - save as Sys.evtx
Compress both files, and upload them to your SkyDdrive public polder, and post a link.

Sorry, it won't let me put links in my replies so I've had to delete the https:// from each.
I have a few more observations that I'm not sure are relevant:
1) When the product key is working, there is no "wallpaper" or "theme" loaded. I load the "theme" that I normally use and the next time I start the computer, the product key doesn't work.
2) I also get an error message regarding the sound card and there is no audio output when the invalid product key message is active. Works fine when the product key is valid.
Thanks again,
Joe
Tuesday, December 10, 2013 3:43 PM -
1) Ah - that could be the clue - what exact theme are you using? Some 3rd party themes aren't compliant and are know to interfere with Win7 significantly.
2) This would indicate resultant errors, I think, rather than causes.
The System log (which is all I've looked at so far) is stuffed with a number of errors...
Samsung services are failing to load - can't find the file
QuickBooks services are failing to load - (failed to connect)
LanManServer service is failing to start at boot - because it's been told to shut down!
A Large number of EventID36888 errors - I can't see any specific causes for them
One interesting thing is that SuperFetch is refusing to start, because of 'invalid data' - I've not seen this before, so I'll have to research it.
Many other errors are probably resultants of (one or more of) the above ones.
Probably the one to concentrate on would be the LanManServer
Please open an
Elevated (Administrator) Command Prompt window and use the following
commands....net start LanManServer
sc qc LanManServer
sc queryex LanManServer
sc qprivs LanManServer
sc qsidtype LanManServer
sc sdshow LanManServer

Ah ... where to start.
The Theme is called "Fractal Art by Cameron Bashaw." Been so long since I got it that I'm not sure where it's from now. I think I got it from Asus (downloaded, not at purchase).
The first two System errors could be explained by starting up without connection to those devices, couldn't they? The Samsung is my phone and we use a networked-version of QuickBooks at work. I could understand that drivers on my laptop might look for them when starting up.

Hmmm - all the output is normal.
The theme is actually hosted by MS - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/fractals-download-theme - so it should certainly be OK (perhaps reinstalling it would help??).
I'll have a play later and see if I can find a way to repro the problem.
