CRM is really a tool, like an Office product. However, it features a wonderful interface that allows for customization and extensibility without having to perform any development work. In simplistic terms, CMR is sort of like Access. There is standard functionality built-in that will satisfy most users' business needs, but you can also enhance that functionality (like adding new entities and workflows).

I would recommend grabbing the CRM bible, Working with Dynamics CRM.

  • CRM is an application albeit with a larger footprint than the office programs. However, the architecture behind CRM is such that you can throw away the interface and work with the back end as you see fit.

It is similar, in some ways to the development engine behind the Office products (press Alt-F11 in Excel to see what I mean). You can work with Excel normally, or you can add VBA to the back end of Excel to turn it into something completely different i.e. a web spider.
