Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy is not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been using my Windows 7 Ultimate version for almost 2 years and now I am getting the subject message indicating that my copy is not genuine.

As indicated I ran the MGADiag tool and I would please like to know the reason why I got this warning. I would be very disappointed if after two years of registering my copy I found that it is not legal and I was scammed. Why would Microsoft allow registration of an illegal copy of Windows 7?

  • The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.

Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.

You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

You may be able to get a complimentary copy of the OS from Microsoft - fill in the Counterfeit report here...

  • Thanks Noel for your answer.

I am not a MSDN subscriber, I am just a simple user who bought what was apparently a legal copy of Windows 7 and now after almost two years of registering it, have learnt that it is a fake or not-for-resale copy.

I bought it via ebay from what looked as a good seller. It was not a bargain and came in what looked as a retail box of windows 7. So, I guess this is a very good fake. Unfortunately, for me, I bought it about two years ago so, I guess, I have nothing to do in order to recover my money any more.

Thank you for all the links with helpful information. It is a shame that it is now too late for me.  What I cannot quite understand is why these copies are allowed to be registered without advising its MSDN nature. Even more it is difficult for me to understand why it takes so long to identify these copies as not genuine.

I will definitely use the link to report the Counterfeit copy and also see if I can still find the seller on ebay, but I doubt it. Otherwise, I guess I will just become another ubuntu user.
